Description: One album of photographs and postcards, probably compiled by Elizabeth Porteous of the NZANZ (New Zealand Army Nursing Service) who was awarded the ARRC (Associate Royal Red Cross). These are mainly postcards of her travels in England and Scotland during World War I. Also contains some images related to nursing work. The photographs relating to military nursing work include group portraits of patients and staff at a military hospital, two taken during Christmas celebrations. There are also two photographs of an interior of a large industrial building being used as a dormitory, probably to house soldiers. Subjects and locations are all unidentified. Postcards include: Views of Edinburgh, Scotland, include Edinburgh Castle, Craigmillar Castle, The Abbey Strand, St Giles Cathedral, the Palace of Holyroodhouse and Arthur's Seat, Queen Margaret's Chapel, and the 'audience room' at the former residence of John Knox. Views of Bath, Somerset, England, include Bath Abbey, the Grand Pump Room Hotel, and Roman colonnades. Views of Brockenhurst, Hampshire, England, the location of No 1 New Zealand General Hospital, and including views of the Rose and Crown Hotel. Views of Christchurch, Dorset, include the Christchurch Priory Church, Constable's Ruin (Constable's House), Highcliffe Castle, and a thatched cottage at Wick Ferry. Description: Photographs of the South Island of New Zealand taken by Les Cleveland, 1956 to 1958. Information relating to the content as well as the date taken and the date printed, is on the rear of most prints. Most prints relate to the West Coast Region, but also some images of Nelson, Canterbury, and Otago regions. Identified people are: Kopara Sawmill workers Bill Brown, Owen Jacobs, Morry Pullman, Hans Van Ruyven, Jimmy Birchfield, Doug Macalister, Joe Kavanagh, Neil McLean, Archy Fluerty, saw doctor John Henry Ord, Ted McGhie; licensee of Nelson Creek Hotel D Graham; Dorothy Debenham; Mick Bowie, and chief guide at Mt Cook Hermitage. Unidentified people include a female French tourist and some children. Featured natural environments include Karamea beach scenes, mining and sawmilling sites, and Buller Gorge. Featured town sequences include Reefton and Nelson's Creek houses and businesses, many of which are derelict. Photographs of Armagh Street Bridge show wrought ironwork rather than solid stone in the top section. United Service Hotel building was under construction in 1885 and was completed about 1886.
