Description: Photographs from three expeditions in the Homer area, between the Upper Hollyford Valley and the Cleddau Valley, December 1943-January 1944; December 1944-January 1945; and the Homer Tunnel Museum Expedition in February 1946, all taken by John Tenison Salmon. Many of the photographs are landscapes, but others show native plants growing in the area. Two sequences show the damage caused by avalanches, one showing damage to bush and to a bridge in 1944; the others show damage from a major avalanche which buried the eastern portal of the Homer Tunnel which was under construction at the time (September 1945). Description: Photographs, some by identified photographers, chiefly relating to lighthouses in the South Island of New Zealand. Most of the signed photographs are dated between 1915 and 1919. The unsigned ones were taken in 1924, possibly during a trip to the lighthouses on the Government ship Tutanekai. Many of the images show aspects of life at remote sites, including travel by dinghy, transportation of cattle using slings to carry them from a ship to a dinghy and then to land, and picknicking on Stewart Island. Description: Photographs of YMCA Christmas trips in 1938 and 1939, to Milford Sound and the Whanganui River, taken by William Hall Raine. As well as photographs there are a number of newspaper and magazine cuttings, some of which were produced in the New Zealand Free Lance (January 25, 1939), following the Wellington Y.M.C.A. party on their trip to Milford. The photographs of the Whanganui trip were not taken by William Hall Raine, as he was on the Milford trip at the time. Description: Records of New Zealand Sounds Hydro Electric Concessions Ltd, incorporating also the records of the Milford Sound Nitrate Syndicate Ltd, and various research studies on the feasability of nitrate and aluminium production and other possible uses for electric power produced in Fiordland. Includes newspaper clippings on the Bowen Falls controversy. The bulk of the records are concerned with the period ca 1920-1930. The records include correspondence, a cash book, a financial ledger and a number of printing plates. Description: Album of photographs taken by James Valentine & Sons, circa 1880s-1900s. Most of the images have a caption printed into the photograph, and many also have a hand-written caption beneath. At some point many of the photographs have been removed from their slots, and others have been placed in the wrong slot so that the subject and caption on the photograph does not match with the caption below. Places are listed above. There are five photographs of Maori, three of women, two of chiefs. The names given are difficult to identify, having complicated spelling, and the captions on photographs have faded in some cases. They include "Maori wahine Ngareti"; "Maori chief Hoera Watene"; "Maori chiefs Panapa Tenihotiti and Topopoki" and "Maori wahine Huihana?". This sheet of slides includes a group of seagulls, ducks and trout at Queenstown, Lake Wanaka in autumn, the road from Queenstown to Kingston from bus, road to Lumsden, Lake Manapouri from the Waiau River, Lake Te Anau from the road, Te Anau southern fiord, waterfall, road through beech forest after coming through the Homer Tunnel, looking down the Cleddau River, Mitre Peak from the hotel, looking over Cleddau River to Arthur Valley, Bowen Falls from airstrip, view of Milford Sound on launch trip. Slides on this sheet are numbered 232-264 with gaps for those removed for lectures on New Zealand. Description: Transparency slides of Mr E G Williams' (Edmund Gardner Williams') travel in New Zealand in 1959. This sheet of slides includes views of a launch trip in Milford Sound and some of the Milford Track, taken circa 12-15 February 1959. There are no photographs from the period between 15 February and 1 March during which time Williams travelled to Te Anau, Invercargill, Dunedin (including the Invermay Agricultural Research Station), Christchurch, Nelson, and Wellington, before taking the bus to New Plymouth (information from his diary). The views of the New Plymouth area include a view of Mary and Matthew Russell's home Tupare where he stayed, views of Mount Egmont, a garden with flowers, and an unidentified country house at Tokaora (near Hawera). Slides on this sheet are numbered 265-299 with gaps for those removed for lectures on New Zealand. Arrangement: Mr Williams transferred slides (nos. 268, 270, 274, 277-284) showing a launch trip on Milford Sound, and parts of the Milford Track; then slides (nos. 287, 289, and 291-295) which go straight to the New Plymouth area showing Mary and Russell Matthew's house Tupare from the river, Mount Egmont, and a country house on the road to Tokaora. Description: Collection of photographs taken by various photographers including the Burton Brothers, George Valentine, Josiah Martin and Marc Ferrez. On page [67] there is a hand-traced map of the world with a route marked on it from London, to Plymouth, Canary Islands, Cape Town, Tasmania, Wellington, Lyttelton, Cape Horn, Rio de Janeiro, Canary Islands and back to Plymouth and London. The distance travelled out was 12,948 miles, and distance home was 11,915 miles. The photographs cover most of these places, with more detailed travel through Tasmania, and especially New Zealand. Scenes in New Zealand were mostly taken by the Burton Brothers and Josiah Martin. They include views of the main cities, and a large number in the thermal area around Lake Rotorua and Mount Tarawera, showing the area around the Pink and White Terraces before and after the eruption of Mount Tarawera in 1886. Photographs by Josiah Martin include portraits of Maori, and one entitled "The old order changeth" with Maori artifacts, shrunken heads, and a portrait of Tawhiao. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s).
