Description: Album of publicity photographs, and photographs of posters and advertisements taken by unidentified photographers for New Zealand Railways. Many of the images in this album were taken for a series of articles written by Oliver Neal Gillespie between January 1939 and June 1940, published in the New Zealand Railways Magazine. The series was entitled "Buy New Zealand goods and build New Zealand. New Zealand Industries Series". These contribute the largest group of images in the album, covering a wide range of industries. They include men's and women's clothing manufacturers; electrical engineering companies such as Pallo Engineering (petrol pumps), National Engineering (Neeco electric ovens), Standard Engineering Company; tobacco factories; potteries; Nugget shoe polish factory; brushware factories; and companies associated with the manufacture of food products (eg Watties canneries, Edmonds Baking Powder, Griffins and Bycrofts biscuit makers, and Whittome & Stevenson sauce and pickle makers. There are other sequences of images, including newly built state housing in Lower Hutt, with some houses still under construction beside the Hutt River, a streetscape, and a children's playground (p 7-8); a large crowd joining in a send-off of R.S.A. men to Australia in April 1938; a train laden with boxes of oranges from Rarotonga, the "Special orange train from Auckland"; and photographs of charts showing the progress of the New Zealand Government Railways, with railways workshops staff organisation charts (for Otahuhu, Addington, Hutt & Hillside Workshops (p 28-29). On p 35 there are views of a new hangar at Rongotai Aerodrome, under construction, then views of the completed exterior and the interior with a row of Blackburn B-5 Baffin bi-planes. Several images show collection of Railway sports trophies (including cups for their cricket teams), and two views of New Zealand Railways staff member Neil Edwards, a tennis champion who represented New Zealand in Britain in 1939. Description: Maker(s) not identified. Contains silver rose bowl with black stand, with a netting to hold blooms. The black base has a plaque inscribed "presented to Mrs. Basham by St Mary's Church members, Waipukaurau July 1924". The cup was likely pesented to Mrs Maud Basham when she left Waipukurau after six years, to go to Ngatea. She had taught music and choir, and organised entertainment groups in Waipukurau. Description: Political cartoons. Nato forces are briefed on their bombing target which is surrounded by civilian services like hospitals and schools. The Police encourage IBM to take their INCIS computer and jump off a bridge. IBM spent millions of taxpayer dollars on creating a new Police computer system that never worked. Mt Eden prison guards try to work out how prisoners are getting out and drugs getting in. Admidst the ruins of Belgrade Milosevic stands victorious. The Police consider getting rid of the INCIS computer to a crime consortium believing it will stop them dead in their tracks like it has done to the Police. Milosevic uses peace talks to buy time to destroy war crimes evidence. Police operations are stoped in their tracks by the weight of the INCIS computer disaster. Comment on retailers selling liquor to underagedrinkers The Serbs pull out of Kosovo as Nato forces enter the area. Comment on the New Zealand cricket team making hard work out of limited over cricket. The Soviets welcome the Nato forces to Yugoslavia. Shows a ship load of Chinese boat people on a collision course with New Zealand as the National coalition Government passes emergency legislation allowing mass, indefinite detention of asylum seekers. Inland Revenue Department assures the public that all small and powerless taxpayers are bullied equally. Serbia puts the blame for large scale death and destruction in Kosovo on the Nato bombing campaign. Shows newspaper ad for a crown entity boss, all perks and no responsibility. Minister of Immigration, Tuariki Delamere sets one standard for migrants and another for himself and his family. Jenny Shipley shoots TV news presenter, John Hawkesby in the head with a rubber arrow. He received a substantial pay-out when his contract was terminated. The Mongrel Mob supports Tony Ryall's plans to introduce tougher penalties for home invasion, if it relates to their homes being invaded but not their neighbours. Comment on breach of privilege by the Prime Minister Jenny Shipley and TVNZ over the John Hawkesby pay-out. Rugby supporters froze to their seats during a recent rugby match. The convent reunion shows ex-pupils grouped by the year they attended the school, a dinner, a table of trophies etc. The Blaketown jubilee is marked by a procession of floats, the creation of a Miss Jubilee, a dinner etc. Also included are a two older copy negatives of Greymouth and scenes on the wharves with what may be a shipwreck and the grounded vessel the Abel Tasman. Description: A man with the letters,'W.R.F.U' (Wellington Rugby Football Union) on his jacket bangs a nail into the wall on which he intends to hang 'The shield' (Ranfurly Shield) for the year 1956. A rugby player stands behind him proudly holding the shield but just behind him an auk (Auckland) pokes its head through the door and in the second scene, siezes the shield and makes off with it leaving the man with the hammer and the rugby player in a state of great consternation. Refers to the Ranfurly shield which was won from Canterbury by Wellington September 22, 1956. This cartoon is probably the one drawn to be published if Wellington then lost the Shield to Auckland in a challenge a week later - in fact Wellington won, 9-6, so this cartoon would not have been published. National's Bill Birch reassures the NZ public about the world wide economic crisis. Jenny Shipley calls for a confidence vote for National's 'vague and ill-defined policies.' National Party Finance minister, Bill Birch panics about the world economic situation. Jenny Shipley reassures the public National has a calm and sober hand on the economic tiller. The new Minister of Police, Clem Simich promises to raise police morale. A senior police officer asks Simich if he's resigning already. The Government reconsiders it's plans to deregulate producer boards following a hostile reaction from fruit growers. Jenny Shipley reassures elderly New Zealanders that national super will not be cut but it will be allowed to fall behind the cost of living. Treasury cuts medical care for children under six. Taken by a range of photographers, most of whom are unidentified. - Contains images relating to Unwin's performances as a violinist when he was a child, playing the piano accordion (and winning Wellington Competitions Society trophy), and as a double bassist and pianist with various groups. Images include staged group and candid individual portraits of Unwin both by himself and performing with others. Images of note are an orchestra playing in a back yard, a music group by a band rotunda, and a dance band at a party in Upper Hutt [W Beavis?]. - Also contains images from Unwin's time working in Australia.
