Description: Photographs probably taken by George William Barltrop, between 1900 and 1905. The images follow on from McIntosh album 15, (these are pages 815-835) starting at Opunake (a church building). Pihama (a memorial to members of the crew of the barque Lizzie Bell which was wrecked off Oeo, 24th July 1901), a view of the Oeo Hotel (F. Morgan, proprietor), and a view of the mast of the Lizzie Bell standing as a memorial at Pihama. These are followed by a panorama of Parihaka (p. 822-823), and a portrait of a man named Ruru, at Parihaka. The rest of the album has scenes in the Auckland area, including a view of Queen Street in which the chemist shop of Charles J Ratgen is clearly visible. A series of images show various Maori artifacts on display at the Auckland Museum. Scenery in Auckland includes the Auckland Domain, Epsom, Tamaki, Auckland Harbour, Rangitoto, St Heliers, Mount Hobson and Mount Eden. Two church buildings are seen, one at Opunake, and the remains of a stone church at Tamaki. A group of photographs show horse-drawn carriages decorated with flowers for a floral fete (p 835-838). Description: Photographs of Auckland and Coromandel, taken between 1880 and 1901 by an unknown photographer. Includes views of Parsons & Fowler families (1890), St Heliers Bay (1890), Imperial Troops in the Auckland Domain, an arch erected for the visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York in 1901, Onehunga Hotel in Princess Street, the Auckland Domain, Views of Northcote, Birkenhead, and Birkenhead Wharf (1880), tradesmen's processions in Domain, and the Mercer Regatta. This group of negatives have crenelated notches along their sides. This indicates that they were manufactured for a Frena Camera. This camera was the first type of film-pack camera. (see "Deja View 37," August 2003, edited and published by Bill Main, Wellington, New Zealand). Information that came with these negatives is filed at PAColl-8960, and is in the Photograph Archive collections sequence. Description: Charles Hill-Trevor's personal album of the time he spent as personal secretary to Lord Ranfurly, Governor of New Zealand. It records the New Zealand contingents sent to the South African war and public events, personalities and patriotic entertainments associated with that enterprise. Visits to Government houses in Australia record other governors, officials and official residences. On one occasion in Melbourne a New Zealand versus Australia polo match was played. Hill-Trevor shows an interest in Māori, wildlife conservation (including the bird sanctuary on Resolution Island), and the sports of fishing, polo and horsemanship. There are photographs of members of the Ranfurly family and their principal servants as well as the Governor engaged in official functions such as opening the Kaiapoi council offices and laying the foundation stone of the Veterans Home, Mt Roskill, Auckland in 1903. Description: Transparency slides of New Zealand, some purchased and some taken by Mr E G Williams' (Edmund Gardner Williams'). Purchased slides (nos. 923, 926-930) were taken by [Neville] Hatwell. Slides include images of Skippers Gorge, pampas grass near Whangarei, Mount Tarawera from Lake Rotomaha, a sunset off the Scilly Isles (showing a "sun pillar"), views of Auckland buildings and parks, the Treaty House at Waitangi, the Stone Store at Kerikeri, Cooper's Beach, and a scene near Whangaroa. The last six views were taken in the Bay of islands, some showing farmland owned by Mr Williams' friends the Woods family. These were taken from the cream launch which visits outlying areas, one view showing passengers on the launch and Russell from the launch. Slides on this sheet are numbered 923-946. (Full sheet of 24 slides with none removed for Mr Williams' representative collection which he used for his lecture series when he returned to England). Description: Nineteen vignettes of daily life, mostly of Maori life, including a parody of a Goldie portrait (All 'e same te Pakeha) showing an elderly Maori man grimacing and quaffing rum; a Maori woman with toothache; "A hero of many fights", a profile view of a tattooed man with many bandages on his face; "On the Waipa", a Maori woman rowing as she drinks alcohol, with a small boy and a pig eyeing one another in the front of the canoe.
