Description: Cadastral map of subdivisions, some numbered, in sections 312, 313 and 314 on the corner of Brougham and Elizabeth streets, intersected by Moncrief Street. Includes acreages and boundary measurements. Sections 313 and 314 include C.T. numbers and are part of D.P. 240. Names include W. Hodson, F. & C.S. Cording, P.Chetwood Watt, E. S. Quinlan, Education Board which is currently the site of Clyde Quay School. The plan for alterations, for Mr. L. Quinlan, (builder) for a residence at 32 Brougham Street includes faint outlines of the original building. Specifications are not included on the plan but a pencilled note gives measurements in square feet. Other Titles - Alterations to residence - 32 Brougham Street - for Mr. L. Description: Photographs of construction projects undertaken by Hansford & Mills Construction Company. The most important section consists of views of Parliament Buildings in Wellington, with a large number of images, both exterior and interior. Much of the detail relates to the marble columns and veneer, the marble sourced from the Kairuru Quarry in the Takaka Hills. Interior views show details of various areas, including the Legislative Council Chamber, the House of Representatives, the Maori Committee Room, the lobby for the members' lounge, and marble decoration in the main vestibule, the first floor, and the staircase. There are a number of images of the Kairuru Quarry, showing methods of quarrying the marble, transportation of the marble to Wellington, and machinery used for cutting and shaping the stone once it had arrived in Wellington. One scene also shows the incline at the old quarry at Sandy Bay. Other buildings, all only exterior views, or views of steel construction in early stages, include the State Fire Insurance Building (Featherston Street), Magnus Motors (Wakefield Street), the steelyard in Cable Street, the Ford Building (for Colonial Motor Company), and the Wellington Gas Company buildings, all in Wellington. Also two views of the Christchurch branch of the Wellington Woollen Company. Description: The bulk of the records comprise project files relating to prospective projects. While many are for jobs taken on by the firm, others are for proposals not taken up. Most of these files were part of the firms in-house library, serving as a key record of past projects. Arrangement: The project files have been boxed, with the titles of each file listed in the scope note for each box. Most files have a running-number registration, but this has not been noted in the preliminary box list. Stephenson&Turner is an Australasian architecture firm. It opened a New Zealand office in Wellington in 1956, and the New Zealand activity is now New Zealand owned and operated. It has specialised particularly in commercial buildings, hospitals, universities and other large-scale projects, throughout New Zealand, but particularly in Wellington and Auckland.
