Description: A collection of postcards and printed views (possibly from a magazine) of New Zealand scenes primarily of towns and cities rather than scenic views. They include one of two Maori women washing clothes at Rotorua, another of the Royal visit in 1927 and a family group of seven men and three women possibly taken in Belfast. A number of the postcards have been used. Also included are five original photographs which have been captioned with the family connections: a soldier in uniform, possibly named Ralph Ferguson; Uncle Henry Babe's wedding photograph; cousin Violet Bradford in America; Albert and Elizabeth (Eliza) Babe (brother and sister) and four others; Thomas and Fanny Babe (grandpa and grandma) with Eliza, Harold, Albert, Olivia, Queenie and Gladys. Description: Album of photographs taken by James Valentine & Sons, circa 1880s-1900s. Most of the images have a caption printed into the photograph, and many also have a hand-written caption beneath. At some point many of the photographs have been removed from their slots, and others have been placed in the wrong slot so that the subject and caption on the photograph does not match with the caption below. Places are listed above. There are five photographs of Maori, three of women, two of chiefs. The names given are difficult to identify, having complicated spelling, and the captions on photographs have faded in some cases. They include "Maori wahine Ngareti"; "Maori chief Hoera Watene"; "Maori chiefs Panapa Tenihotiti and Topopoki" and "Maori wahine Huihana?". Description: Charles Hill-Trevor's personal album of the time he spent as personal secretary to Lord Ranfurly, Governor of New Zealand. It records the New Zealand contingents sent to the South African war and public events, personalities and patriotic entertainments associated with that enterprise. Visits to Government houses in Australia record other governors, officials and official residences. On one occasion in Melbourne a New Zealand versus Australia polo match was played. Hill-Trevor shows an interest in Māori, wildlife conservation (including the bird sanctuary on Resolution Island), and the sports of fishing, polo and horsemanship. There are photographs of members of the Ranfurly family and their principal servants as well as the Governor engaged in official functions such as opening the Kaiapoi council offices and laying the foundation stone of the Veterans Home, Mt Roskill, Auckland in 1903. Description: Transparency slides of New Zealand, some purchased and some taken by Mr E G Williams' (Edmund Gardner Williams'). Purchased slides (nos. 923, 926-930) were taken by [Neville] Hatwell. Slides include images of Skippers Gorge, pampas grass near Whangarei, Mount Tarawera from Lake Rotomaha, a sunset off the Scilly Isles (showing a "sun pillar"), views of Auckland buildings and parks, the Treaty House at Waitangi, the Stone Store at Kerikeri, Cooper's Beach, and a scene near Whangaroa. The last six views were taken in the Bay of islands, some showing farmland owned by Mr Williams' friends the Woods family. These were taken from the cream launch which visits outlying areas, one view showing passengers on the launch and Russell from the launch. Slides on this sheet are numbered 923-946. (Full sheet of 24 slides with none removed for Mr Williams' representative collection which he used for his lecture series when he returned to England).
