Description: Shows Bill Birch, Minister of National Development and Prime Minister Rob Muldoon on a tractor that represents the 'Clutha High Dam'. It is being pushed by a much larger tractor representing 'legislation'. The Clutha dam was a key policy plank in National's "Think big" strategy.When the High Court refused the scheme a water right the government promptly wheeled up special legislation. Description: Shows six frames. Under the title, text reads 'I think, what this lady really has in mind is a 'Helicopter hall'. The first frame shows the Christchurch town hall with a helicopter rotor on its roof. The cartoonist suggests it could also serve as a temporary railway station. The second frame suggests the 'Helicopter hall' could serve as a new Supreme Court. The next frame shows the hall acting as a 'stand-in stand' at Lancaster Park, while one of the stands is being rebuilt. The fourth frame pictures the cartoonist looking up at the 'Helicopter hall' and text reads 'We could use it as a combination bus shelter and telephone box at our corner.' His secretary has opened the office door to find anti-nuclear protestors outside but cannot say if Muldoon is there or not. In the waste paper basket is a newspaper announcing that Tom Scott, a Listener journalist, is still being barred by Muldoon from accompanying the official delegation to the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in India in September 1980. Description: There are three scenes in this cartoon. In the top right some men and a woman are walking along twisting their arms and hands into contortions. One man is saying he never knows what to do with his hands when he doesn't smoke. In the lower left Jim Bolger, the Minister of Labour, is sitting with his hand over his face. In his other hand he is holding a newspaper with the headline 'Kinleith shutdown unions vote to stop mill smoking on April 8'. This is a reference to the strikes in early 1980 at the Kinleith pulp and paper mill. In the lower right Muldoon is reading a memo on the smoke free day fron George Gair, the Minister of Health. Muldoon is proclaiming that he's not going 'to stop smoking-out reds for even one day" - a reference to his dislike of socialist and communists. Description: Shows the Clutha River flowing through a canyon. On one side stand Clyde Dam workers hammering a sign into the ground which demands a 15 per cent pay rise. On the other side are Muldoon and Bill Birch wearing a hard hat. Muldoon is angrily refusing to meet the workers' demands. At the bottom of the canyon two scientists from the D.S.I.R. Description: The first of three horizontal frames shows a quiet scene with mountains and forest and includes text that reads 'Deep in the woods a creature stirs and sniffs the wind...' The second frame shows a close up of the trunks of forest trees with a sinister figure disappearing into the gloom; it includes text that reads 'Five hundred elderly are trapped in a hall, it can't wait...' The third frame shows Winston Peters making a speech; text reads 'With some difficulty, they give it a rousing standing ovation... and he says 'I'm back, and I'm still angry...' Winston Peters served as Minister of Maori Affairs in the Bolger National Party Government before being sacked in 1991 and losing party endorsement for his Tauranga seat. He returned to Parliament in 1993 as an independent, after defeating Gail McIntosh National MP for Lyttelton and then formed his own party, New Zealand First in July, shortly before the 1993 election when he kept his Tauranga seat as an independent, to be greeted by his elderly devotees, after he was sacked by the National Party and after he won the bye-election but before the launch of NZ First in July. Description: Six-panelled account of the popularity of dolphin Pelorus Jack in Pelorus Sound in the 1890s (until 1912) and of the dolphin Opo at Opononi in Northland in 1956. These illustrations were reproduced in New Zealand newspapers during the late 1940s and early 1950s. The newspapers included The Evening Post, Auckland Star, Christchurch Star Sun, Taranaki Herald, Southern Cross, Students' Digest, Greymouth Evening Star, Evening Star (Sports) Dunedin, and the Southland Daily News.
