Description: Correspondence and diary of William Mortimer Baines who came to New Zealand in 1850 on the `Sir Edward Paget'. The papers deal with his interests in mining, timber and land. Includes letters from the Fooks, Dixon and Hunt families of Australia. Includes letters from Maryanne Verdon Baines (1859-1869), mostly to her husband after his departure for England. These are concerned to a large extent with her loneliness in Auckland and with plans for her voyage to England. In addition there are a number of letters written in 1869, by Maryanne and William's children, Fanny, Katherine and Rosa. Source of title - Supplied William Mortimer, came to New Zealand in 1850 on the `Sir Edward Paget'. In 1869 he returned to Britain, although he retained a financial interest in land in New Zealand. Description: Title continues `...Children of the 4th Regiment Waikato Militia.' The biography details the stories of James and Anne Raynes, their children and others who worked and played with them in the dairying district known as Rukuhia, West Hamilton. Includes extracts from war diary kept during the South African War. Nina Campbell's grandfather, George Aillen Pritchard was a 4th Militia man recruited in Sydney. Her father and Jim Raynes's father enrolled in Hamilton as substitutes. With a background of whaling and sailing ships from Samoa, Canada and England, these three men and their wives became settlers in the Waikato after the confiscation of the Maori lands.
