Description: View of the start of construction work on the Berhampore (or Centennial) Flats on Adelaide Road in Wellington, for the State Housing Department. Shows the building site, and the structure and scaffolding of the apartment block. In the distance is the premises of the Berhampore Tennis Club, and other houses in Berhampore and surrounding hill suburbs. Photograph taken in May 1939, by an unidentified photographer for the Evening Post. Source of descriptive information - Caption from Evening Post 26/5/1939, p7, reads: "A start has been made by the contractors with the erection of the multiple dwelling block at Berhampore for the State Housing Department. When completed it will be the largest building of its kind in New Zealand, containing 50 separate flats and eleven garages. In the background is the Berhampore Tennis Club's premises". Description: View from Fairfield, looking south-west across the eastern suburbs of Lower Hutt, toward Wellington Harbour. In the middle of Norton Park Ave, which runs the breadth of the photograph, is the bridge over the Waiwhetu Stream: the path of the stream is marked by the line of trees leading to the bottom right corner. The road running from Norton Park Ave is Parnell Street, which turns into Woodvale Grove at the bottom of the photograph. To the right of the Waiwhetu Bridge is North Street, leading into Burnside Street. Wyndrum Ave runs around the bottom of the Eastern Hutt hills on the left. Somes Island is visible in the distance. Taken by an unidentified photographer, circa 1930s. Woodvale Grove, Parnell Street and North Street were no longer there after the development of Riverside Drive. The new buildings of Wellington College are in the top left and evidence of the recently demolished old gothic school is visible on the terraces in front of the main buildings. Taken by an unidentified photographer, circa 1931. Note on back of file print reads: The buildings stand as a result of the rebuilding carried out during the 1920s - the last of this being the addition of the two classroom wings which opened in February 1930. The old gothic school was still standing in March 1931. This may have recently been demolished as there seems to be some activity on the terrace in front of the main buildings.
