Description: Album of photographs taken by Percy James William Simmons of the 15th Reinforcements of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, 1916-1917. Includes scenes on the troop ship 'Ulimaroa' en route to Plymouth, Sling Camp and surrounding villages, Messines, and London and Edinburgh on leave. Percy Simmons, son of Edgar and Harriet Simmons of Taumarunui, was engaged to Elsa Bass, a teacher. Description: A weeping Thomas Mackenzie, New Zealand politician, is pushed away from a stool by a policeman wearing a label 'Boundaries Commission'. Other stools are empty, labelled 'High Commissionership - or ?', 'Tairei lost 1911', 'Waikouaiti lost 1908', 'Waihemo lost 1902'. In the background Prime Minister Joe Ward and another politician are playing games with a 'seat'. Published in 'Grant, Ian F. Public Lives - New Zealand's Premiers and Prime Ministers 1856-2003 (Book title)' 2003. Extended Title - The Hon. T. Mackenzie, Minister for Commerce and Agriculture in the Ward Government, has suffered the loss of his seat after three consecutive sittings of the Electoral Boundaries Commission. After being driven to Waikouaiti by the abolition of the Waihemo seat, he had to stand for Taieri at the last election, though his constituency being again done away with. This year's census figures necessitated the transference of one seat from the South to the North Island, and again Mr. Mackenzie was the victim. He announces his intention of contesting another seat, not yet named, but the opinion is generally held that he will be sent to London to fill the High Commissionership shortly to be vacated by Sir William Hall-Jones. Description: Aerial views, exterior views and interior views of the Gear Meat Company at Petone, between 1955 and 1963. Includes sheep in holding pens, various areas of the meat works showing activities such as skinning, whole carcasses, various stages of preparation for packaging meat for the local market and for transport overseas; further products including canned meat; tallow; hides; wool; and fertilizer. Vehicles for the transportation of meat include ships at London Docks unloading frozen carcasses, and a fleet of delivery vans for the local wholesale trade. One photograph shows Prince Philip (the Duke of Edinburgh) visiting the meat works in 1956, coincidentally at the time of celebrations for the 75th anniversary of the Gear Meat company. Different Gear Meat Company shops are shown, in Jackson Street, Petone; in Upper Hutt; and at 94/98 Lambton Quay. The first `Primary Fresh Foods' shop opened by the company at 12 Bunny Street, Lower Hutt, is seen on opening day with a delicatessen section as well as meat department. There are exterior and interior views of the different shops. A number of views show hostel accomodation for meat workers, showing exterior views, a bedroom, a kitchen for communal use, and a social hall. The final section shows the Gear Meat stall at Hutt Valley Industries Fair, 19-27 August, 1960; and their stall at the Manawatu & West Coast Agricultural & Pastoral Association Show in November 1962. An envelope inserted at the back of the album contains views of sheep holding pens, further scenes of the interior of an abatoir, and one view of the Gear Homestead.
