Maori Battalion on the way from New Zealand to Egypt

Description: Personal record of a soldier in the Maori Battalion of the journey from New Zealand to Egypt, Second World War. Begins with troops lined up on the show grounds at Palmerston North on the 31st of April 1940. Troops embarked on the 1st of May 1940 and sailed for Fremantle, Australia, and were there by the 8th of May. There are photographs of Fremantle Harbour, Perth University, and Maori soldiers with Australian friends. Also photographs of Maori soldiers on deck of ship. The troops sailed from Femantle in a convoy that included the liner transports, Queen Mary, Aquitania, Empress of Japan, Empress of Britain, Mauretania, and Andes. They were in Capetown on the 16 May 1940, and Freetown, Siera Leone on the 23 May. The convoy arrived at Greenock on the Clyde River, Scotland, on the 6th of June 1940. From the 8th of June 1940 to the 2nd of January 1941 the troops were stationed in the south east of England where they did battle training. The places include Bognor, Aldershot, Bostling Green, and Guildford. On the 3rd of January the troops embarked on the Athlone Castle, part of a large convoy of transports and warships bound for Egypt, which they reached on the 1st of March 1941. There are two panoramic views of the convoy, and many photographs of the Maori troops on board the Athlone Castle. In Egypt photographs show the troops landing, the camp at Maadi, gardens at Helwan, training in the desert, views of Cairo, and tours to the pyramids. The last part of the album are photographs of Capetown and its surroundings, other unidentified places, and more snaps taken in Egypt. Quantity: 1 album(s).

Description: Photographs relating to the life of Bryan Scoullar, taken ca 1917-2010, particularly his service in the army during World War II. Bryan Scoullar collected all the images and took some of them. Images are arranged in a loose chronological order, and contain: Family photographs, circa 1917-1941, showing his mother Genevieve (nee Pope), his father Arthur, and his brother Patrick. Snapshots of the family are taken at the family residence in Wellington and during outings and holidays in New Zealand. Includes images of Patrick during the war, at home on leave, and overseas. Two school photographs taken at Marist Brothers' School, Wellington, probably of Patrick or Bryan. Photographs related to Bryan Scoullar's military service in North Africa during World War II. These are taken and collected in Egypt, Syria, and the Western Desert, ca 1941-1942. There are also some images taken during his training at Trentham army camp ca 1940, and documenting journey on board ship 'Nieue Amsterdam'. Contains images of patients, staff and activities at No. 3 General Hospital, Egypt, where he worked as an orderly. Includes tourist photographs taken and collected during travels in Egypt, and a trip with 5th field ambulance unit to Jerusalem and Syria. Also a group of Images taken at the Bulldog Club, Helmieh. Description: Comprises photographs taken and collected by Leonard Rennell James Robinson who took part in World War Two in the Middle East Force. Includes photographs of army personnel in New Zealand in 1939; on the "Aquitania" about to leave for Britain; other transports which they joined in convoy which include the "Queen Mary," the "Empress of Canada," the "Empress of Japan," and the "Andes;" ports of call at Cape Town and Sierra Leone, and a view of the transports entering the Clyde at the end of their journey. A few images show a group of soldiers in camp at Aldershot, and ambulance training on the Kent Coast. Four images show the vapour trails of fighter planes in the sky over England. War in the desert is recorded by images of an ambulance being loaded; motor vehicles on a desert highway; an encampment; a scorpion; unexploded bombs in the sand; Italian prisoners of war; wrecked German tanks and aircraft; dead Germans; cemeteries in the desert.
