Description: Hand-drawn map of the area from Taumarunui following the main trunk line and the Ongarue River northwards to Mangeokewa River to the Waikato River and Waihaha River to Waituhi. Creeks, streams and rivers are named, some marked in blue. Watersheds of the Mokau, Wanganui and Waikato Rivers are prominently marked as are land blocks and mountain peaks which include height in feet. Lines of the Taringamotu Company's Tram and the Mangapehe Tram are drawn and the map includes many references to tram formations. Directions with mileages are given to Lake Taupo. Description: A cadastral map of rural lands open for selection on lease in perpetuity, of the area from the Te Awaroa River to the Wai-inumia Stream, including the Kawhia-Alexandra Road. This base map has numbered sections, some have been coloured, and include acreages, owners' names and dates handwritten in each section. A small map, named Kawhia North S.D., mounted at the top left of the main map, is of sections 5 and 7 which are adjacent to the Awaroa River and one and a half miles to the Hauturu P.O. Includes one owners' name, acreage and a mounted cutting about section 5 and handwritten information including the poster number and date. A second cutting about section 3 is mounted on the bottom left of the main map and includes the relevant poster number and date. The map on the reverse has some sections outlined in red with a prominent note stating 'Superseded. See map on face'. The base maps are of sections in the Kawhia County. Auckland land district No. 753. A schedule of the second class land is referred to in a key. The map includes directions to the nearby settlement of Kawhia, and the vegetation and terrain are named. Description: Base maps of rural lands open for sale or occupation with right of purchase, or for renewable lease, in terms of the Land Act, 1908, in the Wharepapa Survey District, West Taupo County and in the Waipoua Survey District in the Hokianga County. The boundaries of farm blocks in the Wharepapa Survey District, Sections 1, 6,7, 11-24, are prominently outlined, the majority include owners' names and applicable dates handwritten in each section. A scenic reserve, domain and recreation reserve, hospital reserve, cemetery and creamery sites, and the Puniu, Waipari and Mangaharakeke Streams are marked. The roadman's paddock, the school site and temporary reserve have Gazetteer numbers. Brief descriptions of the terrain and vegetation are included. The base map of the Waipoua Survey District has two cuttings about land in the Wharepapa Survey District mounted over the top of it. The first cutting has '1393, 25-7-21, cash or D.P.' written adjacent to it while the second cutting has '1406, 23 & 25-1-2l, for general application' The main base map is of farm sections in the Wharepapa survey district, 15 miles from Kawa Railway station in the West Taupo County, Auckland Land District No. 1195. The second base map is of farm sections in the Waipoua Survey District, 8 miles from Kaihu, in the Hokianga County. A schedule of these districts include the valuations, acreages and rent. Police are searching and frisking spectators on entry to the grounds to prevent protestors from disrupting the game. One policeman is restraining a spectator carrying a placard and telling the Sergeant that the spectator is determined to enter the grounds free-of-charge. Refers to the game played in the Waikato at which protestors against the Springbok tour disrupted the game by running onto the pitch, causing the game to be called off. Description: Tylden began writing his reminiscences in 1907 and continued till 1913; he writes of his childhood, education, military training in England and coming to New Zealand in 1862 with the 70th Regiment. He gives full accounts of skirmishes in the Waikato, Wanganui and New Plymouth areas from 1863 to 1866. Following his discharge in 1868 he returned to farm in the Pukekohe area until 1881 and practised law in Auckland from 1882 to 1912. Description: Part of an account written by James Gidley telling of his experiences in New Zealand and Rarotonga, 1931-1938. Describes Gidley's time in Auckland, his trip to Wellington, voyage to Rarotonga and his experiences in Rarotonga. The account details his search for work in Auckland and his experiences working both in Auckland and on several dairy farms in the Auckland and Waikato regions, such events as the visit of a faith healer to Auckland as well as describing various places he stayed, his attempts to get to know women and his own eating disorders. In his description of his time in Rarotonga he makes some comments on living conditions, other white residents, relations between the races, prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases and details his attempts to have sexual relations with Rarotongan women. Description: Drawn on a published map of Mayor Island to Poverty Bay with an extended portion of another map glued to include the area from Mayor Island to the Mercury Islands. The annotations depict extended river and partially smooth water limits at various points around the coastline from the Mercury Islands to Poverty Bay. The limit for Gisborne fishing boats extends from Cape Runaway to Poverty Bay. A reference key is included which states that river and smooth water limits are coloured blue and one area is prominently named Te Kaha river limits. Extended and partially smooth water limits are coloured red and three areas are prominently named Tauranga; Whakatane, Ohiwa and Opotiki; Te Kaha extended river limits. The Tauranga extension for fine weather only, at the discretion of the Inspector of Fisheries, is coloured green. 'Opotiki extreme limits' covers the approximate area between White Island and Whale Island. An additional area has been shaded green for the extended river and partial limit from Whangamata and Tauranga to Mayor Island, with details written in biro added at a later date. Also marked in biro are three anchorages for launches, one at Waihau Bay. 'George Siroper 9/1/25' is handwritten adjacent to reference key, at centre top of map. Signature hard to decipher. '133/47' is handwritten centrally on the map. Nos. '6' and '2527' and 'Restricted limits - Bay of Plenty' are handwritten on the reverse Base map: Mayor Island to Poverty Bay / surveyed by Captain W. Description: Album containing 1928 souvenir booklet celebrating New Zealand's first Commerce Train, which travelled through Auckland Province between 26th October 1928 and 4th November 1928. Souvenir number of the Commerce Train News, published by New Zealand Railways. Bound in with the book are photographs taken by an unidentified passenger on the trip. There are photographs in the booklet, which include several portraits of men on the trip, photographs of farmland, dairy factories, cement works, Arapuni Hydroelectric works showing the dam and the spillway, kauri forests, trains and cars, and group photographs of the personnel. Description: A base map of rural lands and small grazing runs for lease in the Tauhara Survey District, on the shores of Lake Taupo, has been used by H. Hill to show his own land and other sections leased by him. Several farm blocks include pencilled monetary values while others are shaded and include positions of buildings. H. Hill's own section has handwritten notes 'Afforested & finish', 69 acres, Sold' and adjacent to this section a note states ' Letter to I. Hislop Oct 23/22 re leasing reserve/thermal sp.'. A handwritten pencilled note states 'George Wall, Waitahanui, Tender for fencing' with several pencilled arithmetical sums. The Taupo - Napier Road continues as hand-drawn lines in ink across farm sections. Several sections are marked as withdrawn. A hand-drawn compass indicates the aspect. A letter mounted on the bottom right of the map is a reply from the Commissioner of Crown Lands, K.M. Graham, to H. Hill about lease of extra land. The base map itself is of sections of lands in the Tauhara Survey District, Auckland Land District No. 1095. Includes references to Native Owners and Crown Land, a thermal springs reserve. An extensive statement on the left side of the map begins with the heading Rural Lands and small-grazing runs for lease, and include the date of 24th. October 1911 at the District Lands Office, Auckland. A schedule of the sections includes the valuations, acreages and rent. Description: A poster-plan map number 839 made up of two maps, one a cadastral map of Whareorino survey district available for lease, the other a locality plan of the locality in the Waikato, from North Cape to Taupo. The cadastral map depicts Whareorino S.D. VII as Crown Land, and highlights in red the narrow strip of 230 acres along the cliffs as the land available for lease. Also depicts 1231 acres of Crown Land assigned to WH Cummings and GP Moore, 596 acres of Crown Land assigned to J T Hatton, Lot 1 of 2 assigned to W F Spence, with 666 acres of Lot 1 and 2 of X assigned to WF Kelly and HJ Kelly. Description: A poster-plan map of Auckland Land District no. 1317 depicting 2102 acres of land for sale or lease to discharged soldiers. Made up of two maps, one a cadastral map of the Mangoira Block, indicating numbered sections and including acreages, owner's names and dates handwritten in each section. The other is a locality plan of the area from Kaipara Harbour south to New Plymouth which has an arrow pointing to Awakino. The map includes several paragraphs of text stating conditions of sale, information about the 'second class land', and instructions to applicants. The cadastral map depicts the Awakino North Survey District, with handwritten names listed as CM Raven, MC Pratt, LR Jones, T Cummings, GP Sage, CJ Randell, (earlier owners include Claud Neville de Gray Stevens, S Whitehead). Bordering these properties are the owners WD Black, JR Terrille, SM Black, Thomson, Jones, Cummings, Condon, Beuck, and well as two Native Reserves, and Native owners (Maori land blocks) of Mahoenui no. 4b and Manga - Awakino no. 4.
