Description: View from the lower end of The Terrace, looking down into the Aro Valley and Te Aro Flat and across towards Mount Victoria, Oriental Bay and the Miramar Peninsula. Part of the Thorndon end of the city can be seen on the left. Courtenay Place runs away from the viewer in the centre of the scene, with Marjoribanks Street moving up Mount Victoria. The gasometers on both sides of Courtenay Place show clearly. On the far right is Wellington College Issued with descriptive text sheet. A number show the house `Fernhill' in Woolcombe Street (now part of The Terrace), Wellington, views from the house and its gardens. Portraits in clude Laurie Denton, Tom Tolley (locksmith), Alfred Bennett and his family, Mrs Denton Snr, Mrs Waters (had a grocery shop in Dixon Street), G L Adkin (as a boy), Miss Dixon (of the aerated water family, the Dixons of Dixon Street), George Butler (artist), and Beaglehole (David Ernest Beaglehole, father of Professor Ernest Beaglehole, and Professor John Cawte Beaglehole). Description: Album of photographs of early Wellington, circa 1880s to 1890s. One view shows the wreck of the Oliver Lang at Kaiwharawhara. Other views of ships show the RMS Ruapehu on arrival in Wellington; the ship Pleione in port, and the Opawa on the patent slip at Evans Bay. Other views in the album include one of the tram track on the way to Oriental Bay; Te Aro (1883); Wellington from Bolton Street; Government House and Offices; a view from "Gaol Hill" (near the Te Aro Prison at the junction of The Terrace and Abel Smith Street); a tram run by the Wellington Tramway Company in front of Government Buildings; the corner of Featherston Street and Lambton Quay with the Union Bank of Australia and Johnny Martin's fountain; the tombstone of Mete Kingi Paetahi at Whanganui; the memorial to Te Wharepouri at Ngauranga; the Karori Reservoir; and a view of the mouth of the Hutt River from the eastern hills. Description: Shows ships in harbour, houses, and a man driving cows on a hillside path at right. From Brooklyn looking across Te Aro and the harbour to the Hutt Valley. At left is a Maori wood-gatherer. Tall tree in left foreground has the creeper kie kie growing on it. A tree has been felled in centre foreground, and there is a cabbage tree at right. Upper Willis Street runs down to Clay Point, at the junction of the present Willis Street and Lambton Quay. Thorndon Flat lies beyond ending at Pipitea Point. Description: Scene by C D Barraud reproduced on a Christmas card sent out by the law firm Bell Gully Buddle Weir in 1970s. Shows the view from the hills at the southern end of the city, looking northward along the longer axis of the harbour, and was taken towards the close of a fine autumn day when the light of the setting sun was reflected on the distant masses of the Rimutaka and Tararua Ranges. The lower slopes of Brooklyn Hill are in the foreground, with the houses of Te Aro Flat in the middle ground, part of Mt Victoria on the right, ships in the harbour, Somes Island and Petone with the Tararua Ranges beyond in the distance.
