Bound by Parliamentary Library, using blank pages to bulk out the contents. Red buckram, half red morocco Catalogued by Parliamentary Library as the work of I W Wilson and ca 1910. The signature and style is that of L W Wilson, although the signature appears to read I W Wilson. The Alexander Turnbull Library holds the original watercolour for one reproduction, the view of Lake Manapouri (reference number A-123-002). It also holds second copies of several other reproductions, 5 with a separate printed portfolio cover titled 'New Zealand scenery. From water colour drawings by L W Wilson Esq. S and W Mackay, booksellers, Wellington'(reference number A-192-018/022). The portfolio-style cover with the latter group includes cotton ties opposite a spine binding, suggesting that the reproductions were unbound. Dating: Wilson left New Zealand in 1904. He probably had these copies made before leaving. The view of Manawatu Gorge was also published as a postcard. The Library holds a copy at E-279-160 sent in 1906. Title supplied by Library. Description: Album of photographs taken by James Valentine & Sons, circa 1880s-1900s. Most of the images have a caption printed into the photograph, and many also have a hand-written caption beneath. At some point many of the photographs have been removed from their slots, and others have been placed in the wrong slot so that the subject and caption on the photograph does not match with the caption below. Places are listed above. There are five photographs of Maori, three of women, two of chiefs. The names given are difficult to identify, having complicated spelling, and the captions on photographs have faded in some cases. They include "Maori wahine Ngareti"; "Maori chief Hoera Watene"; "Maori chiefs Panapa Tenihotiti and Topopoki" and "Maori wahine Huihana?". Description: New Zealand scenes including thermal areas in the North Island, and river, mountain and roading scenes in the South Island, taken by various identified and unidentified photographers between about the 1880s and 1900s. Two photographers, Josiah Martin and Patrick Thomas Malaghan took most of the images. Other identified photographers include Edmund Wheeler, F. Finch, A.J. Iles, Charles Spencer, Edward Le Grice, J.V. (James Valentine), and Ross (Photographer, Invercargill). Several of the unidentified photographers are listed under their initials only, and include one with the initials T.S.M (or S.T.M. in a monogram), also A.A.B., R.G., Rooney, Luney (?), and L.M. A large number of those taken by Patrick Malaghan show Skippers Road and the Shotover River, with Pinchers Bluff, Huttons Cutting, Hell's Gate, and Skippers Creek. Thermal areas in the North Island show the Pink and White Terraces before the 1886 eruption of mount Tarawera, and also a number taken after the eruption, including the remnants of Te Ariki Pa. A large number also show various geysers, mud pools and hot springs. One method of crossing rivers is shown with the Hooker Wire Bridge (or Hooker Cage) and a "chair" travelling across a wire in Skippers over the Shotover River. Note on this box reads: "1st Ball Hut print" (no. 33); and "J. Martin "Mt Cook"" (no. 66). Most of the places identified are listed above. Other Titles - Old P.O.P. Description: Photographs of mountains and valleys in the Arthur's Pass National Park, including numbers of views of the Otira Tunnel under construction, with interior and exterior views. Various photographers have been identified, some with only their surname. They include H C Peart, A A Lee, [?] Manson, [?] Beck, T.C., John Pascoe, W D Frazer, [?] Barrett, and C Beken. From information about William Alexander Kennedy it appears that a large number of the photographs were taken by him, taking groups of former students on mountaineering trips. Many of the images show groups of young people, none of whom are identified, taken circa 1925-1926. (See article at http://www/nzine.co.nz/features/wak.html) Many of the images show winter views including icicles formed on waterfalls, frozen spray on twigs, and one with frozen spume near the Otira Tunnel. Image no. 25 shows an undentified woman standing at the foot of a semi-frozen waterfall, and image no. 64 shows an undentified woman wearing a woollen coat with fur collar and a felt hat, looking at icicles in Arthur's Pass. Image no. 43 shows "The Birches" in winter, near the summit of Arthur's pass on the Bealey side. Image no. 65 shows four women and a men with armfuls of mountain lilies in Arthur's pass. Images no. 70-71 show a small ferry [?] by the pier at Lake Brunner. Image no. 89 shows three men and a dog standing near a mountain hut, with a camera on a tripod. Description: Collection of photographs taken by various photographers including the Burton Brothers, George Valentine, Josiah Martin and Marc Ferrez. On page [67] there is a hand-traced map of the world with a route marked on it from London, to Plymouth, Canary Islands, Cape Town, Tasmania, Wellington, Lyttelton, Cape Horn, Rio de Janeiro, Canary Islands and back to Plymouth and London. The distance travelled out was 12,948 miles, and distance home was 11,915 miles. The photographs cover most of these places, with more detailed travel through Tasmania, and especially New Zealand. Scenes in New Zealand were mostly taken by the Burton Brothers and Josiah Martin. They include views of the main cities, and a large number in the thermal area around Lake Rotorua and Mount Tarawera, showing the area around the Pink and White Terraces before and after the eruption of Mount Tarawera in 1886. Photographs by Josiah Martin include portraits of Maori, and one entitled "The old order changeth" with Maori artifacts, shrunken heads, and a portrait of Tawhiao. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s).
