Description: Cartoon strip showing scenes of defeated rugby players from the various provinces "conquered" by the British Lions rugby team: Wyrapper-Bush [Wairarapa-Bush], 'Awkes Bay, East Coast Poverty Bay, Wellin'ton, Wanganui, Taranaki, Manawatu-'Orowhenua, Waikato, North Auckland, Auckland. At lower right, two men talk over a beer, and one wonders just what was in the food parcels that New Zealand sent to Britain. The title "Sad hearts and coronachs" may be a play on the title of the 1949 British film "Kind Hearts and Coronets". A coronach is a Scot or Irish dirge or lamentation for the dead. Although the Lions won games against provincial sides they were beaten 3-1 in the four-match test series. Description: A group of well-heeled people are having drinks in a living room overlooking the Waitamata Harbour with Rangitoto in the distance. The harbour is festooned with yachts and there is a picture of a yacht on the wall. A man who looks like a boating-type poses elegantly with his wineglass in his hand. He tells the others that he is thinking of doing the South Island which he believes is about 600 kilometres south of the Bombay Hills. The cartoon is a comment on the parochialism of Aucklanders, this one seeming to regard the South Island as a foreign country. According to Gordon Coates' daughter, Mrs Sheila Pryde, this album belonged to Gordon Coates' wife Marjorie, who collected, and may have taken some of the snaps when she accompanied her husband travelling in various parts of New Zealand.
