Description: Contains whakapapa, karakia, and cosmological notes about the separation of Rangi and Papa; also contains narratives about the lives and actions of other deities including Tawhakai, Tangaroa, Ruatepupuke, Maui, Rata, Rautapu and Uenuku; in these accounts there is information about the origins of various beliefs and practices. Also contains a seven page narrative about Te Ati Awa incursions into the Wairarapa following their migration to the Wellington area [compare with version by Best in qMS-0202] and the capture of Te Uamairangi and Te Kakapi o te rangi, niece of Te Wharepouri, and the subsequesnt peace making at Pito-one (Petone); there are also copies of a petition calling for increased Maori representation in Parliament, and a letter to Maui Pomare with regard to land at Pouakani. Description: Notes in Maori and shorthand, correspondence, printed waiata. There are two letters; one is from Kerehoma Tuwhawhakia of Wanganui dealing with the settlement of the Wanganui area, and the process for collecting traditional information; the other letter is from Tutakangahau of Maungapohatu and includes a karakia. There are also notes dictated by Tamarau Waiari of Ruatoki, dealing with Tuhoe history, whakapapa and land tenure (possibly associated with the Urewera Commission), notes about various Maori vocabulary items, notes about customary concepts and practices, waiata and karakia (from Tuhoe?), there are also notes in shorthand that are headed `Te Amiowhenua' and may discuss that military excursion by Ngapuhi and their allies.
