Description: Handwritten drafts, research notes and some newspaper clippings relating to the New Zealand Wars, particularly around Taranaki and Waikato, haka and waiata and mountain legends. Includes 'Patriotic chants. The Maori land and the Maori King' which features a haka that was performed at Manawapou in 1854, given to Cowan by Ngahina of Matangarara, who was present at that hui. It begins 'E kore Taranaki e makere atu...'. Also includes 'Haere mai ra' [?] which Cowan describes as a whakatete which begins 'Piri ki whea? Piri ki te whare ki te Kohekohe...' also includes a translation in which Cowan says the composer wrote this to 'shame Wiremu Te Wheoro' who was 'taking sides with the Pakeha'. Also includes mountain legends relating to Taranaki and Ruapehu, and a draft of the 'Battle of Waireka' [1860] and the 'Niger Ballad' and research notes about Hapurona and clippings relating to Waiotapu. Description: Notebook relating to the Taranaki War and Kimble Bent, also includes loose papers which were tipped into the notebook. The loose papers include correspondence, clippings, a sketch of Tauranga-ika Pa and a handwritten account [in an unknown hand] relating to cannibalism. Both letters were written on 14 August 1903, one from Patea by T G Hammond and the other on Polynesian Society, New Plymouth letterhead by W H Skinner. Both letters are relating to sourcing photographs or images of Maori leaders involved with the Taranaki War, or 'hauhau leaders'. Some notes written in shorthand.
