Description: Folder contains a translation into English from Maori by Cowan of George F Allen's account of Bishop Selwyn's visit to Ngati Tuwharetoa leader Te Heuheu Tukino at Re Rapa, Taupo in the 1840s. The account relates the offering of a sleeping partner for Bishop Selwyn by Te Heuheu Tukino. On the last page of the document Cowan discusses the veracity of such an action by the Maori chief. Cowan also notes this account by Allen is referred to in his book `1902 supplementary edition of Willis's guide book of new route for tourists, Auckland-Wellington, via the Hot Springs, Taupo, the volcanoes and the Wanganui River', page 122. Allen's account is in Maori and suggest that the reader must ask "some Pakeha-Maori to interpret it for them". Also contains an unidentified poem which begins "How brightly the dawn maid comes webbed in rosy plumes". Language - Translated from Maori into English Source of title - Transcribed from item Cowan worked as a writer, historian and journalist. He was a fluent Maori speaker and wrote the two-volume `The New Zealand wars: a history of the Maori campaigns and the pioneering period (1922-1923)'. Defence of Pukekohe papers (lot 181)

Description: Includes a handwritten letter by G McDonald enclosing a six page document by his father, detailing an account of the Pukekohe fight. This letter is quoted in James Cowan's `The New Zealand Wars'. Handwritten letters by Joseph Scott, one with a small sketch map of the church and Maori positions at the base. A letter dated 14 March `22, signed by Arthur [?] regarding the building and construction of the stockade. Christmas Supplement of the Franklin Times, Pukekohe, December 16, 1921. Numerous letters from the reviewer of `The New Zealand Wars'. Arrangement: Contents of this folder were lot 181 of auction where purchased The defence of Pukekohe was an action during the invasion of Waikato, part of the New Zealand Wars. On September 13 and 14, 11 settlers and six militia held off a Maori taua or war party inside a half completed stockade. They were relieved by detachments of the 18th, 65th and 70th regiments. Mentions contact with Apirana Ngata and talks about the role of Bishop Bennett in establishing the Te Awapuni Institute. Describes setting up a Chadwick family trust and comments on the effects of 99-year land leases on Maori. Discusses the importance of church, community and marae in her life. Describes establishing an orchard on family land, picking apples for export and creating employment for the local people.
