Description: The collection consists of two diaries kept by Mary during 1854 and 1858-1859, and letters addressed to her. The largest proportion are written by her future husband, Spenser Mansel Medley and record in detail the progress of their courtship. Other letters were written by Richard Taylor, Mary Caroline Taylor, Elizabeth Marriott and Sarah Selwyn. In addition there are some naval certificates of Spencer Medley. Source of title - Supplied title Mary Catherine Medley was the daughter of Richard Taylor and Mary Caroline Taylor. In 1863 she married Spencer Mansel Medley, a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy who later became secretary to Sir George Grey. Quantity: 17 folder(s). 0.17 Linear Metres. Description: Views of Mount Peel, Orari, Ruapehu, Tongariro and Mount Taranaki, Plimmerton, Westoe, Wanganui River, gardens and bush. Attributed when first catalogued to Laura Harper, the donor's grandmother, then to M. G. C. Lysaght on the basis of style and contents. However the handwriting, subject-matter and style match those of work in other sketchbooks by Mary Medley, who was the donor, Cranleigh Barton's, great-aunt. The Library has been given other Mary Medley sketchbooks by Cranleigh Barton. There was no known reason why Cranleigh Barton might possess a sketchbook by Mary Lysaght, other than a possibility that Mary Lysaght was a friend of Cranleigh Barton's mother. (A niece of Mary Lysaght's, Mrs Mary Watt, can recall a Mrs Barton, who was a friend of "Aunt Mary's") Other Titles - Lysaght, Mary Grace Caroline. Harper, Laura.
