Description: Photographs probably taken by George William Barltrop, circa 1890s-1900s. Most of the scenes are taken on a river boat trip up the Whanganui River, and include two of groups of Maori; one showing two nuns in full habit, walking behind three young Maori girls who are wearing ankle-length dresses. Some of the river scenes show stretches of the river, including several `on the rapids', and one of a group of men in a waka. Others are of the various villages passed on the trip, including one of the river boat tied up at Jerusalem, with a cart drawn by two horses alongside. One view shows the mouth of the Whanganui River at Patea, and from there the images are of the New Plymouth area, including Mount Taranaki (then Mount Egmont), the Sugar Loaves, the monument to Wiremu Tamati on the hill at Corbett Park (Oakura), and Opunake. Description: Views of a trip along the Whanganui River with views of Paranui kainga (listed as Parinui in the album), showing groups of whare, groups of Maori, various activities in the kainga, canoes on the river, and many scenes of waterfalls along the river. These include Taraipokiore (or Tarei-po-Kiore), Otuitu Falls, Ohura Falls, Kakahi Falls. The "Ladder scene", copy of Denton photograph, and other views of the Whanganui River and Ohura River. There is a gap in the album, followed by a separate sequence on Napier. These images include panoramic views of Napier from various locations, church buildings (including exterior and interior views of St John's Cathedral), hotel buildings and other public buildings and memorial statues. Bound by Parliamentary Library, using blank pages to bulk out the contents. Red buckram, half red morocco Catalogued by Parliamentary Library as the work of I W Wilson and ca 1910. The signature and style is that of L W Wilson, although the signature appears to read I W Wilson. The Alexander Turnbull Library holds the original watercolour for one reproduction, the view of Lake Manapouri (reference number A-123-002). It also holds second copies of several other reproductions, 5 with a separate printed portfolio cover titled 'New Zealand scenery. From water colour drawings by L W Wilson Esq. S and W Mackay, booksellers, Wellington'(reference number A-192-018/022). The portfolio-style cover with the latter group includes cotton ties opposite a spine binding, suggesting that the reproductions were unbound. Dating: Wilson left New Zealand in 1904. He probably had these copies made before leaving. The view of Manawatu Gorge was also published as a postcard. The Library holds a copy at E-279-160 sent in 1906. Title supplied by Library. Description: There is a hand-written index inside the back cover, headed "A.G. Tibbutt, Victoria Studio, Hamilton, Feb. 14, 1907" and inscribed "To Fred & Mary, Nelson". At the end of the index it reads "Further albumns [sic] on sale". Fourteen photographs taken during construction of the Raurimu Spiral, between 1898 and 1907. The first six photographs include views of the Whanganui River at Taumarunui, the railway bridge over the river at Manunui, a landslip at Oio, and a bush road at Makatote. Photographs relating to the construction of Raurimu Spiral including a group of railway workmen erecting a camp in the bush, and a scene of camp life, tunnel construction, and snow effects at Raurimu.
