Description: White heron (also known as Egretta Alba or Kotuku) pictured in native bush at Okarito, South Westland. Taken by unidentified photographer. Note on back of file print reads: "White Heron (Egretta alba) at Okarito, South Westland. Called Kotuku in Maori. Tradition says it appears only once in a human lifetime, hence in national affairs it figures only in events of unique importance. From Christmas card, sent by P M Holland."
