Refers to his family background, growing up on a farm where merinos were run, and the hard years and bleak winters during World War II. Mentions being on a train that crashed at Hyde in 1943. Refers to taking over the family farm in 1952, always having more than one breed of sheep, and buying high country land for his children to farm. Comments on mustering on horseback and on foot in steep terrain. Discusses the year's programme on high country stations, rabbit control, and the characteristics of merinos. Talks about beginning shearing with blade shears and machines at age 17 and the equipment used. Comments on shearing full time for seven years, and reflects on changes in shearing over the years. Description: Interview with Tom Leong, born in Canton (Guangzhou), China, in 1930. Includes: memories of life in China as a child; his family background. The Sino-Japanese war which was the reason for his coming to New Zealand as a refugee. Journey to and arrival in New Zealand. The New Zealand Centennial Exhibition, and starting school in Wellington. Working with his father and brother in the green grocery trade. Tom's later education was at Victoria University via Wellington Technical College. He took a batchelor of Science, and later, at Canterbury University, a Batchelor of Engineering (Electrical). During his university years in Christchurch, Tom got involved with the local Chinese community and met his future wife, Patsey. They married in 1954. On completing his degree in 1953 Tom worked first in the State Hydro-Electricity Department. By 1959 he was working on hydro projects on the Waikato River - Ohakuri, Atiamuri and Waipapa. He then transferred to head office in the early 1960s and worked on the first stage of the project to build a link across Cook Strait (Cook Strait Cable). In 1962 Tom got the job of supply engineer with the Wairarapa Electric Power Board, and he and his family moved to Masterton. He gives an account of his lie and work in Masterton including the local organisations and projects with which he was involved. When he retired from the Wairarapa Electric Power Board in 1992, he and his wife moved to Auckland. He worked for five years as a tutor for the Electrical Development Association, and in 1997 was appointed secretary to Auckland Utility Operators Group Inc. He was also staff assessor for the Institution of Proffessional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ). Tom concludes with a general statement about his experience of life in New Zealand. Discusses the eastern part of Sudan being disadvantaged and Bija people being exiled by the government. Mentions a school she established and the government stopping it. Talks about being harassed, tortured and imprisoned and a son becoming disabled and brain damaged through a lack of food. Discusses taking a bus to Addis-Ababa, being followed, and what happened to family members. Refers to being accepted for settlement in New Zealand in February 1998, but being kidnapped. Talks about arriving in New Zealand with no luggage, not knowing where the refugee centre was, and giving birth three days later. Refers to leaving children behind. Katharine refers to bicycling to the St Helen's Maternity Hospital to collect surplus milk for the children's ward at the Christchurch Hospital. Jean refers to how the small wage of nursing made bicycling the most economic way to travel. Talks about the bicycles women would ride and the clothing they wore. Refer to the dress reform of women cyclists and mention Diana Durbin and Amelia Bloomers. Recall various cycling trips and tours in the Canterbury region. Eight relate particularly to the Victorian Tapestry Workshop in Melbourne, Australia. Some photographs taken by Crook, other photographers unidentified. Comprises: Eight relating to Derum and the Victorian Tapestry Workshops (VTW) in Melbourne, Australia, taken 1993 and circa 1993. Images show a tapestry of a montage with Derum, weaver Cheryl Thornton, and Joy Smith. Further images show (students?) working at the VTW including [Grazyua Bleya ?] weaving 'Maritimes'. Six images of Crook and others at the City Art Gallery in Wellington, in Dec 1993, during the retrospective exhibition of Crook's works, curated by Derum.
