Description: Shows the Prime Minister Peter Fraser, standing as Saint Peter with his keys at the Gates of Heaven. He is approached by the "Mountpark" Tribunal, led by the Judge who offers his hand to Fraser. The Gates have labels on them reading, "Mountpark Deadlock" "Now open". This refers to an incident during the 1948 dispute on board the ship "Mountpark" in Auckland Harbour. Fraser was originally shown standing in a nightdress, but, out of respect for the figure of the Prime Minister, this was overlaid with a jacket, tie and trousers. Quantity: 1 original cartoon(s). Other portraits are of Alex Pratt (manager of Hutt Speedways Ltd), George Welch (secretary of the Wellington Indoor Bowling Association), Mic Zamba (president of the Wellington Softball Association) and boxing trainer Archie Lechie. A number of plain diagrams illustrate boxing and wrestling technique. The original collage of caricatures of McNamara's Southern Cross Collegues used in their 1949 Christmas card and another of two men playing rugby are included. These cartoons mainly address Holland's link to the British conservatives (which McNamara had a very negative view of), and cuts he made to wages, pensions and allowances when he came into power. Description: A collection of caricatures and drawings, mostly depicting New Zealand sportsmen who flourished in the 1940s and 1950s. Includes rugby All Blacks Billy Wallace and Stan Dean, a player whose surname is Drake and another unnamed. The speedway champions depicted are Harold Fairhurst, Percy Coleman and Rich Tunbridge. Cyclist and speedway manager Gerry Mathieson is also included. An elaborate illustration 'A Night at the Opera' depicts a Wellington performance of Puccini's Madame Butterfly and features singers Leo Piccioli, Aldo, Ferracuti, Mercedes Fortunati and Maria Huder, as well as the stage manager Bruno Nofri. Description: Prime Minister Michael Savage and Minister of Education Peter Fraser, each wearing a 'W.E.A' tie, are greeted 'G'day Mick!' and 'Howdy Pete!' by two men in the street. The greeting seems to offend Savage and Fraser who call the men 'cads'. Text reads 'The Prime Minister and several members of cabinet were at one time members of W.E.A. classes - it might not be a bad thing for our opponents if they were to go to W.E.A. classes now, but it might be a very dangerous thing for us if they did. Perhaps we should lay down a condition for a subsidy that you will not admit ex-cabinet ministers. Hon P. Fraser, Minister of Education.' Context: Suggests anxiety about class origins by the PM and Minister of Education. Handwritten in ink on verso 'Original by Minhinnick (Auckland) in one of Wellington newspapers about 1932'. Description: Jock Barnes, President of the New Zealand Waterside Workers Union, and Minister of Labour, Angus McLagan, are having a furious fight and have turned the prime minister's office upside-down. Prime Minister, Peter Fraser, has grabbed the phone and now says 'Hello, is that Count Folke Bernadotte...' Context - A clash between the more radical Barnes and Angus McLagan. McLagan clashed with unions who challenged the government's economic programme between 1946 and 1949 and came to see the hand of international communism in union opposition to the stabilisation policies of the war years and after. Count Folke Bernadotte was a United Nations peace negotiator, noted for his negotiation of the release of about 31,000 prisoners from German concentration camps during World War II. After the war, Bernadotte was unanimously chosen to be the United Nations Security Council mediator in the Arab-Israeli conflict of 1947-1948. Description: A double hulled canoe with patched sails carries women to New Zealand. They are very keen to reach 'The land of the long low tweet-towoooo'. The leader takes an heroic stance as she points to the land and shouts 'Look girls! - MEN!!!' Several of the others are reading love stories. At bottom right are the words in brackets '(After C.F. Goldie's famous painting)'. Context - More than 125,000 migrants settled here during the 50s, the vast majority of them British and many of them single women. The painting that this cartoon alludes to is Charles Goldie and Louis Steele's 'The arrival of the Maoris in New Zealand'.
