Description: Views of the Southern Lakes District, interspersed with a few scenes in the North Island taken by the Burton Brothers and Muir & Moodie between about 1885 and 1919. Most of the places mentioned are listed above. Image no. 63 shows a party of men and women at Sandfly Point (Milford Sound) showing some of the women wearing veils over their hats for protection from sandflies; image no. 79 "Phantom canoe as seen on Lake Tarawera" is an artist's impression of the phantom canoe which appeared to a group of tourists on Lake Tarawera on May 31st prior to the eruption of Mount Tarawera on June 10th 1886 and which was considered to be a bad omen; image no. 82 shows a collage "No. 1. Maori Land. The portraits are originals - taken from life"; image no. 094 shows a close-up view of the "wire tram" over the Taramakau River; no. 095 shows a logging tramway in the Taupaki Kauri Bush belonging to Matthew Henry Roe, while no. 120 shows his Kauri Point Sawmill, with the paddle steamer "Oregon" in the background; no. 096 shows a self-acting tramway incline at Wairongomai used for gold extraction; nos 104 and 105 show gold dredges, "the Dunedin Gold Dredge" and "Sew Hoy's Dredge". Description: Negatives taken ca 1900-1915 by John Harold Kendrick in the Awaroa River Valley, Hauturu area, south Kawhia. They show men splitting roof shingles, splitting fence battons, fencing, using a bottle jack in the bush, clearing and bringing in land, and road building. Also a steamboat on Awaroa River, dugout canoes, Maori buildings, groups of people (Maori and pakeha), woman doing hand washing, and short horn cattle. The house built by John Kendrick and his brother Ernest, the vegetable garden, the hens, the house cow, general views of their land on the Awaroa River, and the two men at work and on horse back. Source of title - Title supplied by Library Arrangement: Negatives at 1/2-230859-F to 1/2-230919-F John Harold Kendrick came to New Zealand from Birmingham, England, as a farm cadet. He was balloted land in the Awaroa Valley near Hauturu where he and his brother settled. He farmed there until his marriage in 1917 to Eileen Mina Austin. Quantity: 60 b&w original negative(s). Description: Architectural plans of houses designed by Frederick C Daniell in Hamilton and the Waikato District, including Te Rapa, Taihape, Te Awamutu, Cambridge and Ngaruawahia. Photographs (some taken by G. Cartwright, Hamilton) are included for a number of the hosues when completed. Most of the plans are signed "Fred C Daniell", or "F C Daniell, Architect, Hamilton". The title on the cover attributes the work to his father Charles Edward Daniell, though it was Frederick who had a practice in Hamilton during the period covered by this album, and all the signatures are those of Frederick.
