Description: His papers reflect his involvement in church, political and social affairs particularly through his pacifism Source of title - Supplied title Relationship complexity - Scrapbooks concerning church affairs in Scotland, Australia and Dunedin compiled by Gibb's wife Jeannie (MS-Papers-2054), given by same donor (Acc 74-071) James Gibb was born in Aberdeen, Scotland and educated at the Universities of Aberdeen and Edinburgh. He married Jeanie Gibb in 1881 and they sailed for Victoria in 1882, finally arriving in Otago in 1886. He was minister to First Church, Dunedin for 17 years and minister to St John's Church, Willis Street, Wellington. In 1901 he became Moderator of the United Church. Description: Shows the ship "Dunedin" beside the wharf at Dunedin. A reproduction of a watercolour dated 1953. The ship colours shown here (grey and black hull with white ports) are incorrect. When the Dunedin left Dunedin with her cargo of frozen meat she was owned by the Albion Line of Glasgow. Her hull was black with pink boot-topping. It was not until late in 1882 that the Albion Line merged with Shaw Savill to become Shaw Savill & Albion, when the new colour scheme was adopted. Quantity: 1 colour photo-mechanical print(s). Description: Seven photographic prints taken between circa 1880s and circa 1920s, by a range of photographers. Comprises: - An image of the 'Cheviot football team' with a church in the background, taken by Rentoul, of Cheviot. - A group portrait of two women, two men, and a boy, with a wooden building in the background, possibly a school. Taken by S. Collins of Dunedin. - An image of a soldier in uniform. Inscription on the back reads: "The late Sergeant R. A. Fleming C. Y. C. Killed in action Aug 6th/15 Waldens Knob Gallipoli in his 25th year. To Mr M. Morrison, View Hill, Oxford. From R. Fleming 'Lowland Leas' Fernside". - A photographic postcard of the Waiau Butchery, including five men outside the shop, one on a horse, and one man on a cart with horse, and a dog. Four of the men are dressed in butcher's aprons. - An image of the Dominican Convent, Oamaru. Aotearoa Series. N102. Inscription reads "Wishing you a sale a day, Audy". - An image of five young people in fancy dress. Description: Gold dredges, gold sluicing, and machinery associated with gold mining in the South Island. Includes a few photographs taken in Australia, particularly the Pioneer Tin Mine in Tasmania. Inserted in a pocket in the front of the album are 19 loose prints, chiefly showing various claims in the North Island, some of which are taken by H J Locke. Also named in these images are the Saxon Mine and Ivanhoe Mine. Pinafore Claim was located at Waiotahi, Thames. Cambria Claim was a gold mine located in Thames. Gold King Dredge was on the Clutha River near Roxburgh circa 1899. Title supplied by Library. Date range estimated partly on dates that dredges were known to be operating.
