Description: Album of publicity photographs including designs for advertisements for use in the new Zealand Railway Magazine; designs for posters for use in Railways Ticket Offices and one for a large neon lighting sign "Suggested `Claude Neon' Display for New Zealand Railway Publicity Department, Wellington. `Travel by train'". One photograph is entitled "`Post' corner 1880. Now site of King's Chambers". A number of images show a [Labour Day?] parade of marching people, and floats some of which are advertising NZ Railways holiday destinations, with slogans reading `Come to Rotorua', `Come to Waitomo', `Come to The Chateau Tongariro'. There are designs of title pages for the New Zealand Railways Magazine; a view of a commemorative key with a sheaf of corn on the handle in a presentation box; and designs for a programme of events surround the laying of the foundation stone for the new Government Railway Station, Wellington, N.Z. by HRH the Duke of Gloucester, December 17th 1934. These are followed by photographs taken during the Duke's tour of New Zealand, including crowd scenes in Wellington, Maori celebrations of welcome at Ngaruawahia, and scenes in the Rotorua thermal area. There are a few individual and group portraits of the management and administrative staff of New Zealand Railways, most unidentified. Description: Photograph album of photographs and postcards relating to an unidentified New Zealand family. Compiled by unidentified person, possibly Gladys. Some images are annotated with names, dates and scene descriptions. Taken by photographers Wrigglesworth and Binns, Peter Pan Studios (Wellington), and unidentified photographer(s) between circa 1912 and circa 1925. - Images chiefly show family and friends at home and on holiday, and participating in various recreational activities, cricket, tennis, boating, swimming, and visits to the zoo, deer park and seaside. Also includes wedding scenes and adults and children with household pets and horses. Includes women in 1900s and 1920s fashions, wearing fur coats, cloche hats and carrying parasols. - Identifiable images include: the Hydro Grand Hotel, Timaru; the gravestone of Elizabeth, wife of Robert A Lilley (died 30 Nov 1925); and New Plymouth city and Pukekura Park. Also includes the post office, water tower, the band rotunda and tea kiosk in King Edward Park in Hawera, and St Pauls Church in Normanby. Also includes the old Government Buildings and Pipitea Wharf sheds in Wellington; the HMS 'Chatham'; Auckland city and harbour; and three ladies in a airship theme peep board at the New Zealand and South Seas International Exhibition in Dunedin 1925-1926. - Images of identifiable people include: Ken Impett (?), Frank Fahey, G Nairn, T Brankin in army uniform (circa World War One). Description: John Townley arrived in Auckland from England 1863. He served in the war in Hawkes Bay, and was present at the battle of Omarunui. In 1877 was elected to the first Gisborne Borough Council of which he was a member until 1899. He was mayor from that year until 1907. During his mayoralty the Gisborne water supply was inaugurated - He was Chairman of the Harbour Board for 27 years, Superintendent of the Fire Brigade for 30 years and Chairman of the Gisborne permanent Building Society (Source: Scholefield pp.393). Another source (Back of PA3-0261) gives date of his Mayoralty as 1991- Inscriptions: Verso - J Townley. Arrived in Auckland 1863.
