Description: Portrait of Minnie Gregory Havelaar photographed by George Weigel of Christchurch in 1936. This photograph was published in the New Zealand Free Lance on the 21st of October 1936. Born Wilhemina Gregorine Havelaar in Holland. In her early 20s she left Holland to live in London. In 1907 she came to New Zealand and lived here until 1914. After the outbreak of the First World War, she returned to London and worked with wounded New Zealand soldiers. After the war she returned to New Zealand and worked in the Hanmer Springs Hospital and the Bishop Julius Hostel in Christchurch. She was involved with the National Council of Women, and in 1947 set up the New Zealand branch of Save the Children Fund which she remained involved with for the rest of her life. She was awarded an MBE and the Medal of Merit by the International Union for Child Welfare, Geneva, for her work for Save the Children Fund. Quantity: 1 b&w original photographic print(s).
