Caption - More than two miles of mostly irate drivers doing their morning chore in Wainuiomata again today...The Hutt County Councul is using motorists to consolidate the chips on the new sealing by blocking off two lanes to force all traffic to make a 5 mph crawl over the 5000 (NZ Pound) surface..." Description: Underpass under construction, Waikanae, circa 17 August 1966. Shows machinery working on a road beneath a railway bridge. Caption - "Through the underpass, over the bridge across the river and on into Waikanae - a motorist's view of the new subway travelling north. To the left is the triangular retaining wall responsible for much of the dealy, while on either side of the road are the massive concrete cylinders - 6ft in diamter and sunk to a depth of 70ft - supporting the 225ft deck."
