Description: Very clear views of West Coast gold and coal mines (mainly in the Reefton subdivision), and mining towns, taken by unidentified photographers, except for one of "Wondrous Waiuta New Zealand" Jos. Divis Photo (p 27). Views on various roads include the Reefton to Blackspoint Road, Reefton to Westport Road, the Buller Gorge, the Maruia Road alongside the Inangahua River, Progress Road, and fording a river near Progress Mill. Images relating to mines include a winter picture of the old Wealth (of Nations) waterwheel covered in icicles; and gold batteries at various stages of development. Gold mines include the Progress Mine, Wealth of Nations Mine, Welcome Mine, the Mountain Battery at Boatman's Creek, the Blackwater Mine and the Globe Mine. Coal mines include views of Lanky's Creek Coal Mine, and the Lanky's Creek to Energetic coal tramway showing new bridges and coal miners. One photograph (p 9) shows several men "beach combing" for gold on the West Coast. Description: Comprises holograph diary kept by P Davy on the `Ruahine' and during his tour of New Zealand. After disembarking at Wellington where he visited relatives he toured to other parts of New Zealand. He describes a gathering of Maori following the settlement of fishing rights on Lake Wairarapa, a visit to a freezing works at Belfast, gold mining on the West Coast and Rotorua where he visited a pa, saw geysers and bathed in the hot pools. His journal ends on the return journey to England when staying at Sydney. Also includes transcript of part of the diary (16 Nov 1895-3 Jan 1896). Source of title - Supplied Relationship complexity - Full transcript of diary at MS-Papers-4391 Davy and his Aunt Harriet boarded the `Ruahine' at Plymouth 16 Nov 1895 and disembarked 12 Jan 1896 at Wellington where they stayed with relatives. After travelling around New Zealand they left Auckland for Sydney, 18 Mar. The writer of the diary is presumed to be P Davy, a passenger on the `Ruahine'; he visited members of the Davy family while in Wellington. He was probably one of the Devonshire Davys, a nephew of George Boutflower Davy, an official of the Land Registration Court of NZ, and the son of Edward Davy (1806-1885), an experimental chemist who emigrated to Australia. Description: Journal records his work cutting and forming tracks between Canterbury and the West Coast; meeting with groups of Maori and prospectors; a visit to John Henry Whitcombe's grave at the Taramakau River (he had been drowned on a similar expedition in May 1863) and the wet weather. There is mention of a Maori guide, Jack Tainui, re-burying Whitcombe and marking the grave with two paddles (page 28). Farmer and gold prospector who arrived from Australia to farm in 1860. Leader of a working party contracted by the Canterbury Provincial Government to cut a track to the West Coast, via the Hurunui Plains, Harper Pass and Lake Brunner to the Grey River mouth. Howitt, together with two other members of his party, Robert Little and Henry Miller, disappeared on Lake Brunner on 27 Jun 1863 (the journal ends 20 Jun). Description: Album of photographs of Martin and Thomas families. This album was gifted to Jack M Martin, of Hokitika, on September 7th 1887 by family members or close friends named Lyd and Marian. Photographs in the album were probably complied by the family of Jack M Martin subsequent to 1887. These appear to be from the 1880s to the earles 1900s and some include annotations identifying the subjects, including Capt Capel, Mrs Capel, Georgie Stack, Ann Dundas, and J B Thomson. The photographs show a diverse range of fashions and hairstyles, and depict subjects of a broad age range, and activities such as picnics and sightseeing. It also includes Maori portraits, probably mass produced studio photographs, including Tomika te Mutu, Taraia Ngakuti te Tumuhia, Wiremu Tamihana, Rewi Maniapoto, King Potatau and Kawana Hunia.
