When the Chilton House School closed in 1930, Chilton St James School purchased their goodwill, and incorporating the name into the school. Description: Contains a lament by Te Whakarato of Ngati Whakaue. Also a moteatea by Matangi Hauora of Ngati Raukawa and Ngati Toa `Takoto rawa iho ki te po'. This folder includes a lament from Tamarahi Tomairangi of Ngati Pikiao, composed by Rangi-Mamao of Rotoiti. Cowan writes that Tamarahi recited it to him when they were in camp at Rotoiti in 1896. Also includes a translation of Takitaki-hoe-waka, which Cowan describes as an `Arawa canoe song'. Also `Tangi - song for the Maori warriors killed in the battle of Orakau... from Hurae Puketapu, 1907'. A handwritten letter from Gilbert Mair which explains the meaning of `He waiata mo Te Mea' by Te Riutoto, also includes a copy of this waiata. Dicken, 1879; sister Ada Dicken, 1876-1899, Beatrice `Bebe' Knight, 1899, and Eleanor Inman, 1873-1899; Emma Packe, n.d.; her aunt Augusta Parker, 1875-1889; and Amelia Soder, 1885; referring to domestic events. Includes reminiscences of her childhood in England written between 1891 and 1905. Also essays, recipe books, poetry, sketches and other writings, as well as some personal material associated with her husband who had a private school for boys at French Farm, Akaroa Includes shipboard diary kept by T S Baker on board the Dallam Tower, 11 May-26 Jul 1873, and a fragment of the original passenger list. The ship left London in May 1873. The ship encountered a cyclone in July 1873 which dismasted the ship. Some passengers were transshipped to the `Cape Clear' for Sydney and others stayed on the `Dallam Tower' to Melbourne where they transshipped to the SS Albion for the final voyage to New Zealand Josephine `Dodo' Dicken emigrated from England in 1873 with her father Thomas and sisters and brothers. The Family settled on a property at French Farm, Banks Peninsula. She married Thomas Southey Baker in Christchurch, 17 December 1878. They had four daughters. Description: The reminiscences cover the period 1898-1921 and contain an account of Bedingfield's early life in southern Hawke's Bay. Bedingfield grew up on a farm at Matamau and attended school at nearby Makotuku. After leaving school in 1914 he worked briefly as a labourer before becoming a clerk at the Waipawa and Waipukurau branches of the Bank of New Zealand. He transferred to New Plymouth in 1921.
