Description: Chart of most of North Island (excluding North of North Island) highlighting detail of Wellington, Wairarapa, Wanganui District, Manukau and the Hauraki Gulf. East Cape and inland East Coast show very little or no detail. Insets of Port Nicholson, Kawhia, Tauranga, Waitemata, Manukau and Whangaroa harbours. Extended Title - Compiled by Tiffen from the Government and New Zealand Company's surveys and reconnaisances, from sketches by Messrs. Symonds, D. Bett, R. Harrison, - Richards, J. Description: Plan of Hone Heke's pa at Ohaeawai in the Far North District, Northland shows sites of the flagstaff, Kawiti's house, houses underground, heaps of potatoes and indian corn, pits underground covered with plants and earth, Nos. 1 & 2 - nine pounder guns, No. 3 - six pounder cannonade, c&d - points of attack, a&b - sections taken, are referred to in a key. Doors in the outer fence are marked and the principal place of egress and congress. Positions and distances of a camp and batteries around the pa are marked, also numbers of soldiers. Names include Major Bridge, Lt. Phillpotts, Major McPherson, Lt. Col. Hulme. A sketch on the left of the map is of the pallisade. Notes refer to the inner and outer pallisade with detailed information about the heights and thicknesses of the posts. The sketch on the right of the map is of a Maori wearing a cape, who appears to be using a blow pipe which projects through a section of the front face of the pallisade. Description: Hand drawn early map of the North Island, with names predominantly clustered in North Auckland and the East Cape. The map says "No natives along this [the lower East Coast] coast as far as Ahuriri". Text (several handwritten paragraphs) under the map discusses church delineations over the Island congregation numbers in various areas eg "Congregation will be found at every principal point". Also "East Cape is occupied by our Native teachers, and the congregations are upwards of 1200"; "Waikato is diveded between us and the Wesleyans". The notes divide the North Island into 14 districts. Shows "Bay of Taranaki" and "Knowsley Bay", "Ruapaka" (Ruapehu), omits Lake Wairarapa, Napier, Hastings, includes Wairoa. Quantity: 1 manuscript map(s). Description: Hydrographic and topographic map of the Kawakawa River adjacent to Kawiti, Bay of Islands, Northland. Soundings are in feet and some topographic features are described. Pa sites are referred to as Pomare's old and new Pah, Kawiti's old and new Pah. Pumukus Place is marked, as is the site of a Pa with the name of Tamati Pukututu. Bluffs along the river are marked, also marshy land and a village. The Waikadi River [sic] is named. Description: Map of Porirua Harbour, Titahi Bay northwards to Pukerua Bay, and the Horokiwi Valley, Wellington. Shows unnumbered subdivisions of land around the Harbour, Jackson's Hotel, Thom's Hotel and whaling station. Shows several Maori pa sites, including Pa Warakoua on the southwest side of the Harbour, an unnamed pa near Titahi Bay, Taupo Pa and surrounding Native gardens, the Native path from Taupo Pa to Pukerua, Wairaka Pa near Gibralter Rock, and a settlement at Pukerua. Map probably drawn in 1844 or 1845, according to Drawing and Prints. Also shows several numbered views that relate to sketches housed in Drawings and Prints. Note on map before copying: Portfolio D, [New Zealand Company], marked & 4 by ? Description: Military map of the area from Hokianga Harbour, including Doubtless Bay and Omapare Lake to the Bay of Islands during the New zealand war of 1843-1847. Shows route taken by first military expedition from the Bay of Islands to Tarrawahanua Pa along a native route, and to may and June battle sites. Shows changing postions of Heke Pokai's pa sites wher battles took place. Settlements and pa sites are named, as are bays, rivers, heads. Includes tracks from pa sites, cut roads and horse roads and a cart road. Routes taken by troops under the command of Lt. Col. Hulme are marked. An inset shows the plan of Heke's Pa with strategic positions of a camp and two sites of gun batteries on 1st July 1845, one includes native 'allies' and Walker's party. A caption above the inset drawing states that there is a slight elevation between the battery and the pa so that shot cannot strike close to the ground. Shows mission stations, various pa sites, a cart road, horse road, forests, rivers, a volcanic range and the site of Mr Williams' farm. Pencilled note on reverse of Map 1: Signed Robt. Fitzroy. Description: Map of Porirua Harbour, Paramata, Plimmerton and Pukerua districts with Mana Island. Location of several pa sites indicated: Wairaka Pa near Pukerua Bay; Taupo Pa (built 1844) at Plimmerton, Warakoua Pa on Porirua Harbour's North shore, and a pa at Titahi Bay. Also shows location of Jackson's Hotel, Thom's hotel and whaling station, Maori gardens beyond Taupo pa and Maori path to Pukerua Bay. Subdivisions of land are indicated around Porirua Harbour. Attributed to Charles Heaphy until 1993, because sketches referred to in title were thought to be Heaphy's. Reattribution to Brees because 1. Brees was Principal surveyor for the N.Z.Company and the map shows land subdivisions. 2. Handwriting very similar to Brees' on MS map held by the Admiralty (photo held by Cartographic Collection (823 at / 1844-5 / acc 855) 3. Indications of points of view of sketches can mostly be linked with known originals by Brees. The following list gives the numbers on this map followed by titles and plate numbers of the matching illustration from Brees' Pictorial Illustrations of New Zealand (London, 1847). No.21 [i.e. no. 1 or 2?] = Porirua Harbour no. 35, described as looking towards the north from near Jackson's towards Thom's. No.3. Thom's whaling station, Porerua, no.14. No.4. Porerua Harbour no. 29; also Porirua Harbour, ATL's watercolour (B-031-006), looking south towards Thom's and Paramata Pa. No.5. Paramata Pa, Porerua, no.52. No.6 Porerua Bay, no.12. Description: Photocopy of elaborately drawn coloured manuscript map by W.H. Burnand inserted in his copy of the New Zealand Journal, v.5, p. 312, 1845. Includes much text on map e.g. 'The land round this lagoon swampy', "Beautiful valley'. Gives Ahururi Harbour another name, Hauriru, describing 'at the mouth of the river are two islands, little else than sand, no wood or water'. Data from Capt. Rhodes report 1841, and from Col. Wakefield, Mr Tiffen and Capt. Kettle. Shows routes taken by Stokes and Harrison, from Wellington up the East Coast to Hawkes Bay. Scale out of proportion. Note on verso of original : Ahuriri see 5th March 1853 Gaz - see description of Ahuriri in the Nov. 12, 57 NZ Gazette p.801.
