Description: A-036-028: A view from the north bank of the Whanganui River of the railway bridge at Aramoho, leading into Wanganui township, with a steam train on the bridge. A-036-028: Mangawhero waterfall amidst bush and rocks. A-036-029. A twig of rata in flower. Painted on celluloid mounted by corners on paper backing Some images were mounted out of order when the Library acquired them, hence the numbering 3, 4 and 14 for this group. Possibly produced by Wanganui firm A D Willis and Co. The firm began producing cards, including paintings on celluloid, from 1882. Exhibited in 'Wide-Eyed: Early Images of New Zealand' exhibition of works by settler artists, held at the National Library of New Zealand Gallery, 18 July - 9 November 1997. Description: Photographs probably taken by George William Barltrop, circa 1890s-1900s. Most of the scenes are taken on a river boat trip up the Whanganui River, and include two of groups of Maori; one showing two nuns in full habit, walking behind three young Maori girls who are wearing ankle-length dresses. Some of the river scenes show stretches of the river, including several `on the rapids', and one of a group of men in a waka. Others are of the various villages passed on the trip, including one of the river boat tied up at Jerusalem, with a cart drawn by two horses alongside. One view shows the mouth of the Whanganui River at Patea, and from there the images are of the New Plymouth area, including Mount Taranaki (then Mount Egmont), the Sugar Loaves, the monument to Wiremu Tamati on the hill at Corbett Park (Oakura), and Opunake. Description: Photographs relating to Herbert Spackman and his family and relatives, chiefly taken by him. Places include views of Wellington and bays, Eketahuna and the Wanganui district. Very few of the people shown are fully identified but are likely to be Harry Spackman’s: mother (Eliza Spackman, nee Hawkings), father (Henry Spackman), brother, mother-in-law (Mrs Coxall, mother of Harry’s first wife Amy), and father-in-law (Mr Parnell, father of Fanny Parnell, Harry's second wife). Several houses are shown, including: ‘Rangiuru’, located at 63 Hutt Road, Petone, Wellington; House of Eketahuna farmer David S Lowe; House of David S Lowe’s brother Henry (‘Harry’) Goold Spackman in Wanganui, both interior and exterior, ‘Ben Venuto’ situated at 59 Rintoul Street and house of Henry (‘Harry’) Goold Spackman in Wellington, both interior and exterior views. Herbert Spackman's nephew Roy Spackman (Clement Roy) attended Wanganui Collegiate School, and there are several views of the chapel (interior and exterior) and the music room. Description: Photographs of the Field and Hodgkins families, taken by William Hughes Field; and of New Zealand scenes. A number of views are of Dunedin taken between 1850 and 1868. Professional photographers include W J P Hodgkins, the Burton Brothers, F Finch and F A Coxhead. Individual views show scenes including a match played between the English cricket team vs Wellington, at the Basin Reserve, March 23-24, 1888; fire that destroyed the offices of Buckley & Co, a legal firm in Wellington, circa 1890s; views of a yachting party in Pelorus Sound; a house built of punga logs, circa 1858; various houses belonging to the Field and Hodgkins families, including Cranmore Lodge (Dunedin), and the Field house in Everton Terrace (Wellington). Also includes photographs of the Hodgkins' rented house in Ravensbourne. Description: Shows `Matara', the homestead of H Harper at Wai Ora, Aramoho, Wanganui, in the 1890s. The Whanganui River runs alongside on the left, the farmhouse and outbuildings are on cleared flat land with a slight indication of a garden, fences and rows of trees. Two horses (or cows) are grazing near the river. Flax in the foreground In 1859, Mary Medley's sister, Laura, married Thomas Henry Harper of Wai Ora, Aramoho, Whanganui. Thomas Henry Harper died in 1873. This view is likely to show the Wai Ora property of his son, Henry Harper, nephew of the artist. He is surrounded by older men; including his brother John Walker (possibly in riding clothes), Chang Woo Gow (Zhan Shichai; also known as Chang the Giant) and other unidentified circus performers. Description: Shows a stretch of the Whanganui River at Aramoho, with a large two-storeyed house amongst trees and lawn on the far side. The house is probably Sedgebrook (or Sedge Brook) Grange. Two girls walk along a riverside path in the foreground, and on the river six adults and one or two children pass by in a rowboat, near a flight of wooden steps leading down to the river. Probably shows Sedgebrook Grange, the house of Major John Nixon.
