Description: An album of four parts compiled by John Horsman, chiefly relating to his interests and recreational activites during his time as a teacher at Kawhia School (1946-47) and at Upper River Road School, Ngamatea (1947-48), and during his tertiary study in 1948. Most images taken by Horsman between 1946-1948. Some postcard images are taken by unidentified photographer(s). Each image has a caption on the album page; some images are also captioned on the reverse. - First set of images is titled 'Photographs taken at Kawhia while teaching at Kawhia School 1946-1947'. Most images show landscapes around Kawhia harbour and surrounding environs. Includes images of Kawhia Methodist Memorial Church, Kawhia show day 1946, Hill's bach, Maketu Pa, Waiharakeke school, Puti bridge, Miss Price's car, and Maori pupils of Kawhia school of 'P4 S1 1946'. Images include small number of postcards views of Kawhia township dated by Horsman as 1946-1947. This set of images is prefaced by 16 pages of handwritten essays [probably written by a school pupil] titled 'Some incidents in the history of Kawhia during the Maori occupation of her port', and 1939 newspaper clippings relating to the carving by Tamati Herangi and Konui Maru at Maketu Pa. - Second set of images is titled 'Cycle trip from Auckland to Wellington Christmas Holiday 1946 via Main Trunk, Napier, Lake Taupo'. Includes images of landscapes, buildings and street scenes taken at National Park, Mount Ruapheu, Hutt Road near Wellington, Manawatu River, and Napier. No images of the bicycle appear. - Third set of images is titled 'Photogaphs taken at Ngamatea while teaching at the Upper River Road School 1947-1948'. Images show scenes on the Whangaehu River, including Small Creek, Polson's bridge, and Aranui bridge. Images also show buildings at Ngamatea, farm scenes, snow scenes (dated September 1947), road scenes (featuring an Austin car), and local personalities, including Darkie Winterburn, Eric Hine, Ted Wilson, Andrew Hine, and Guy Gibson. Includes images of the Ngamatea school pupils of 1947; David Hine, Colin Greenough, Mary Greenough, Royce Gibson, Selwyn Laurence, Peter Mann, Barbara Hine, Diana Hine, and Shirley Mansell. - Fourth set of images is titled 'Photographs taken while preparing thesis in economic history 1948'. This set comprises smaller groups showing views in the Bay of Islands, Auckland Region, farm scenes, and family scenes. Images show historic buildings and sites related to early colonial settlement in the Bay of Islands, Northland, and Auckland Region, including the Treaty House, Waitangi; Stone Store, Kerikeri; Pompallier House, Taurere Church, and Custom House, Russell; and the Orongo Bay home of an early American consul. Also includes images of Auckland City and harbour taken in 1948, including panoramic collages of Auckland harbour, the Devonport ferry boats 'Kestrel' and 'Albatross', various domestic architectural houses, and a zoo polar bear. Includes an Automobile Association map of the Bay of Islands. Includes farm scenes taken in Gordon, Waiorongomai, Waihou River, and Wharepoa.
