Description: Album of photographs, mostly relating to New Zealanders in the South African War, but also including many which show the D Battery, 1st New Zealand Mounted Rifles at various military camps in the Wellington region. Many show groups of soldiers, with surnames noted. One view shows the Opening of Parliament in 1898, with a parade of D Battery; and a few show the opening of the Star Boating Club in Wellington. Some images taken by unidentified photographers, some probably taken by Thomas Watson Brown. The earliest image was taken in 1878, and shows a home in Masterton; another image shows a work picnic with a group in a tug-of-war at Day's Bay, in 1912; a group portrait of staff in the Mines Department taken in Wellington, 1907; and a group portrait of the 10th anniversary reunion of the 1st New Zealand Contingent, held in Wellington, 21.10.1909, taken by Zak Studios, No. 7275. Description: A large collection of miscellaneous original and copy negatives mostly of Christchurch and the surrounding area. Some are studio portraits of family groups. The rest of the collection includes: a street scene in front of the old railway station; a cycling race; men rowing and canoeing; children playing in a swing park; a brass band playing on board a steamer; various beach scenes including donkey rides; train pulling into Kaiapoi station; a small bach; two girls next to a waterfall; trams and a cyclist going past the Jubliee Clock Tower; the front facade of St Paul's Presbyterian Church; three views of the old Public Hospital next to Hagley Park; the Chamber of Commerce building on the corner of Oxford Terrace and Worcester Street; a copy negative of a carte de visite of a couple kissing; a monument incorporating a tiki on a tall pole and other maori carvings (location unknown); a man at the doorway of his shed with an array of gardening implements; two men pulling a covering back from a hangi pit; the cathedral with a number of trams in front; a tram advertising Ballantynes; a kitchen interior showing a range with kettles on top and a cupboard and dresser with crockery; six Maori on horseback possibly in a procession; a porter bringing a cart of luggage up to a train; five men giving friends piggy backs on the beach; sheep being driven past stock yards; the Avon River; a crowd outside the Avon Rowing Club; Wilson the maltman's horse and cart crossing a bridge; and two images of a harvest festival in a hall with a painted back drop and sheaves of corn arranged in front of it. Description: A pocket inserted inside the front cover holds two photographs of wedding celebrations at a British Army regiment in India. One of the scenes shows a large party of men and women, including British and Indian men in uniform. These were taken circa 1910. The main body of the album contains views of Canterbury, Otago and the West Coast of the South Island, taken around 1877 by an unidentified photographer.
