Includes journals and diaries kept by him, letters to his family back in England which describe his life in New Zealand, research material collected about Stephens' life including copies of his death notice, survey maps and pages from the `Nelson Examiner', transcripts of diaries and journals, and photographs of his grave. The journals have details of his voyage to New Zealand from England on the `Whitby' in 1841, of his daily life as a settler in Nelson, on the weather, agriculture and horticulture. Description: His papers reflect his involvement in church, political and social affairs particularly through his pacifism Source of title - Supplied title Relationship complexity - Scrapbooks concerning church affairs in Scotland, Australia and Dunedin compiled by Gibb's wife Jeannie (MS-Papers-2054), given by same donor (Acc 74-071) James Gibb was born in Aberdeen, Scotland and educated at the Universities of Aberdeen and Edinburgh. He married Jeanie Gibb in 1881 and they sailed for Victoria in 1882, finally arriving in Otago in 1886. He was minister to First Church, Dunedin for 17 years and minister to St John's Church, Willis Street, Wellington. In 1901 he became Moderator of the United Church. Stephens describes his daily life as a surveyor and settler, events in New Zealand, people he met and other aspects of his working and private life. Contains a wide range of photographs and ephemera relating to her and her parents, Mr and Mrs George Smith of Gisborne, dated circa 1895 to circa 1930s. Photographs include studio and amateur portraits of unidentified men, women, girls and groups; a group standing outside a single storey house with verandah; and several of groups outside a large two storied house, presumably their home at 'Berwen', Grey Street, Gisborne. Ephemera items include postage stamps and stickers; Masterton Girls' Collegiate School certificate for Miss Black, 1895; Christmas cards; dance and garden party invitations; dinner menus; a toast list; riddles [from Christmas crackers?]; an advertisement for Gisborne City Hall recital of Len Barnes and Muriel Smith, 1927; and a postcard for United Treat Movement 1913-14 for State School Children of Poverty Bay District organised by Mr and Mrs George Smith.
