Description: Interview with New Zealand artist and former director of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts, Guy Ngan, conducted from July - August 2011. 'Guy Ngan was born in Wellington in 1926, the son of a Chinese New Zealand businessman and his second wife who herself became a successful businesswoman and family matriarch. Guy was taken back to China as a 2 year old and would likely have stayed in the Guangzhou area there had it not been for the Japanese invasion in 1938. When Guangzhou was bombed Guy's father made hasty arrangements for Guy and his elder brother Albert to leave. The two boys travelled unaccompanied to New Zealand by ship. They lived initially in Newtown but Guy, unhappy at Newtown School, quickly struck out on his own arranging to stay with relatives in Miramar. This was the beginning of an independent way of life and thinking that Guy has continued to pursue.' (information provided by interviewer). Description: The papers consist of: Application form submitted by Roger James Cotton; land documents; history of family and property (including `Cotton family' from printed publication (p524)); photographs The original owner of the land in Waipori District (formerly Tuapeka County) was Thomas Dickson who was granted 15 acres by the Crown in 1872. He died in 1873 and the land passed to his widow Margaret (nee Atkinson) who remarried Robert Cotton in 1875. The land was transferred to Robert Cotton in 1891. At the time of the New Zealand Century Farm and Station award in 2005 the farm was owned jointly by brothers Roger James and Stuart William Cotton (great-grandsons of Robert Cotton). Description: Ink and pencil annotations on partly hand coloured map (incomplete - only part blue colour and some red for proposed roads). The pencil annotations add crosses (population) and accidental orange brush stroke indicate draft copy. Map is hand coloured to a key that reads: 'Lines of road proposed to be made - red. Local position of Military settlements - red circles. Lines of road to be made at a future period - brown. The crosses (black) represent the distribution of the Native Population approximately each cross representing about 100 souls.' The military settlements are most dense in the Wanganui, South Taranaki, New Plymouth, Waipa, Waikato and South Waikato districts and north of the Manawatu River. No such settlements are identified around Wellington, Auckland, Napier or the East Coast north of Mahia. Quantity: 1 map(s). Robert Gillow Elliott - Elliott farm (Mangatahi)

Description: The papers consist of: Application form and land documents to support the application submitted by Robert Gillow Elliott; history of the family's ownership; Plan of Mangatahi; `The Mangatahi Settlement, particulars, terms and conditions', 1907 (photocopy of printed material). Original owner was Robert William Andrew Elliott who acquired 568 acres of the Mangatahi Block by ballot in 1907. On his death in 1933 the farm was run as an estate by his wife Ruby. After her death it was farmed in partnership by their children Joyce and Robert. After three years Robert leased his sister's share, until 2003 when he bought her out. In 2007 it was being run by Robert's son David. In 2007 the property was awarded the New Zealand Century Farm and Station award to mark over 100 years of continuous ownership by one family.
