Description: Two photographs of a Maori picnic at Pigeon Bush on the occasion of the settlement of the ownership of Lake Wairarapa. The first shows a large crowd of men, women and children with Seddon on the right in front of a two-storey wooden house. The second is of the crowd under the trees, one with a concertina, and three men holding up eels they had caught. A photograph of Members of Parliament in the debating chamber. The names given are: Symes, O'Maara, A L D Fraser, J Palmer, Hall, Field, Witheford, Wi Pere, Bennet, Kaihu, Duncan, MIlls, Ward, Cairncross, Stevens, Hogg, F M Smith, Carroll, McGowan and Hall-Jones. A photograph of the opening by Seddon of the Ballance Bridge described as "over Mangahau". It was taken by P De Loree & Son a photographer based in Pahiatua which may indicate the approximate location. The crowd in the foreground is mostly of children and the bridge has been decorated with plants. A photograph of Seddon, Mrs Hogg and Alexander Wilson Hogg opening a bridge. It is captioned at the bottom left "Mangainoka 4.3.1896" but this location has not been identified and the name on the reverse is illegible. Two photographs by Winzenberg of Seddon and others at a Liberal rally near Greytown and at a picnic possibly on the same occasion. Description: Published by John Henry Field [Hone Henare Piira], 1893. Written in Māori with preface in English, by John McGregor [Hone Makareka]. A publication of waiata McGregor collected from Māori prisoners after the Rangiriri battle of 1863. The book is heavily annotated by James Cowan, including two waiata tangi added by him. One is associated with Te Pirihana Tungia and is from Ngāti Toa and Ngāti Raukawa, sung at Porirua in 1905. The other was chanted by Takarangi Metekingi and others at the funeral for the Premier, Richard Seddon, at Parliament House, Wellington, 21 June 1906. Also includes other publications and loose papers that were laid in to this volume. These include: - The legend of Island Bay. Motu-tapu-te-ranga/ by Colonel Porter, published in 1918. - Sketches of ancient Maori life and history/ John Alexander Wilson, published in 1894. - He tapiri ki "Te toa takitini" (a supplement to "Te toa takitini" published by Apirana Ngata). Description: Photographs taken between 1888 and circa 1929, chiefly by James Caleb Cornwall of his family, life, and work. Identified photographers of studio portraits include George Gregory (Auckland), Berry and Company (Wellington), Illingworth Toska Studio (Wanganui), Canadian Studio (Auckland), and Bunting Studio (Palmerston North). Many photographs in the album are captioned underneath the image or on the rear of the print. - Contains images relating to Cornwall's work as a creamery manager and farmer. Photographs feature creamery buildings and machinery, the transportation of milk products by horse and cart, and creamery workers. A number of buildings have the text 'NZ Farmers Dairy Union' painted on them. Farming images feature ploughing, clearance of land, and livestock portraits of cattle and horse prepared for showing. cows, and horses. Various dogs, a pig, and chickens are also seen. - Album features images of areas where Cornwall lived and worked. Locations covered are mainly in the Manawatu-Whanganui Region and include Linton, Shannon, Mangaramarama, Pahiatua, Longburn, Konini, Oringi, Upper Hutt, and Woodville. Specific locations are the farm of R D Knight at Mangaramarama (near Pahiatua), including scenes from Knight's annual horse sale, the Gaseford [Gaisford?] family property at Oringi, the Longburn Freezing Works, Pahiatua train station. Also included are photographs of houses (one hand coloured), cottages, farm buildings, and a bush camp. - James Cornwall appears in many images and his his friends, family, and associates (including employers) are included. Archie Curry, Florence Swan, Jack Capel, Rob Roy, Leo Harding, R D Knight, Ethel Bailey, Phoebe Bailey, Lucy Bailey, Phoebe Swan, Sydney 'Sid' James Short, Fred Bliss, and Jimmy Muir are identified. Prime Minister Richard Seddon is also seen in one image. Album also contains a group portrait of suppliers to the Upper Hutt creamery and another of the Woodville Fire Brigade. Unidentified people include an ex-girlfriend of Cornwall's (a teacher), men at a bush camp, men driving milk carts, and an unidentified family group. - Futher images include the transportation of wood by horse and cart, flooding at Konini, and some images relating to trains (bridges, locomotives, and carriages). Arrangement: Plastic sleeves removed from original orange plastic clear file photograph album (31.5 x 25 cm) due to conservation concern with tight binding warping prints.
