Description: Contains notes about places associated with Kupe in Wellington and Wairarapa, whakapapa, financial records by Tuta Nihoniho and miscellaneous notes about land management There is a lengthy account of the destruction of the Te Arawa canoe by Raumati, and subsequent events, and a related narrative about Raumati's son, Ngarue and his activites and family There are haka and waiata, a list of pa in Taranaki and related iwi, notes about the origins and settlements of various iwi, notes about greenstone, and a narrative about conflicts between Te Ati Awa and Waikato, and the subsequent migration of Te Ati Awa along with Ngati Raukawa and Ngati Toa to the Wellington area There are notes about the arrival of Pakeha in New Zealand before Captain Cook, and a note in Elsdon Best's hand that states that much of the information in the manuscript was extracted from the Journal of the Polynesian Society and other published sources Also contains the names of several muskets belonging to the Ngati Toa which were named in a waiata composed by the wife of Te Pukoro, a Ngati Tama/ Ati Awa chief killed in the Wairarapa in the late 1820s. Description: Extensive view of a plain with volcanic cones in the background, including Mount Hobson and Mount Eden, showing a feast given by Waikato Chiefs in 1844, attended by about 4000 Maori and many Pakeha. A 400 yard-long shed is in the background and Governor Fitzroy is shown visiting the scene with many other Pakeha on 11 May 1844. Features and incidents are numbered and described below the work. A haka is being performed on the right for Fitzroy, Sheppard (the colonial Treasurer) and William Swainson (the Attorney General). Tribal groups are named as Ngatihaua, Ngatikoroki, Ngatimahuta, Ngatiwhatua, Ngatikoura and Ngatiruru and the plain is covered with large numbers of people, the majority Maori. A lithograph presented with Brett's Almanac for 1890, which is derived from an earlier lithograph published by Samuel Augustus Tegg in 1845, which in turn is after an original watercolour of the event made in 1844 by J. Description: Includes reports and correspondence about the activities of Maori tribes and chiefs, mostly of a military nature, for the Whanganui and Waikato districts and the Kingitanga. Also includes a letter from a european settler (identity unknown ?) to a relative about an attack on his residence, which he apparently survived ! Also contains hand written copies and printed matter relating lists of Maori taken prisoner at Rangiriri. The hand written lists (letter) also include the names of returned "rebels"; lists including women and children; deaths for certain years. These are usually arranged by year or kainga (place of residence), or Iwi / hapu (tribe or sub-tribe). All lists relate to Waikato. Finding Aids: Piece level inventory available.

A figure in leaf headdress stands at the far right foreground, and a man with two feathers in a haedband stands on the far left. The flags or banners (seen from the back so that the words are in mirrored form) Tamatera, Ko Waikato, Takoto, Ko Mahuta Te Kingi, Kingi Mahuta Tawhiao Potatau Te Wherowhero, Nga Wahine Rikiriki a Tapaue.
