Description: Journal records his work cutting and forming tracks between Canterbury and the West Coast; meeting with groups of Maori and prospectors; a visit to John Henry Whitcombe's grave at the Taramakau River (he had been drowned on a similar expedition in May 1863) and the wet weather. There is mention of a Maori guide, Jack Tainui, re-burying Whitcombe and marking the grave with two paddles (page 28). Farmer and gold prospector who arrived from Australia to farm in 1860. Leader of a working party contracted by the Canterbury Provincial Government to cut a track to the West Coast, via the Hurunui Plains, Harper Pass and Lake Brunner to the Grey River mouth. Howitt, together with two other members of his party, Robert Little and Henry Miller, disappeared on Lake Brunner on 27 Jun 1863 (the journal ends 20 Jun). Description: Thompson wrote his reminiscences in 1956, shortly before he died. He describes his family background, where they lived, his school days, mostly in Palmerston North, joining Lands and Survey Department, Wellington, in 1905 and moving to Nelson in 1906, Hokitika in 1910, Invercargill in 1911, Hastings in 1913, Wanganui from 1919 to 1924 when he worked for the Public Works Department in the King Country and in 1935 his move to Greymouth. Description: Account of a surveying expedition to the Jacksons Bay area, ending with an overland journey from Martins Bay to Lake Wakatipu, via Lake McKerrow, and the Hollyford and Greenstone Valleys, then to Queenstown and Dunedin, via the Dunstan Road. Having chartered the schooner `Fawn', the party set out from Port Chalmers, making its way northward and through Cook Strait. The party went ashore at Ship Cove in Queen Charlotte Sound. The vessel then rounded Capes Farewell and Foulwind and landed the surveying party at Jacksons Bay. Account includes mention of parties of goldminers in the area, having been dropped off by vessels `Nugget' (p3) and `Courier' (p4), six miners from the `Courier' joining Bain's party; also visit to Claude Ollivier's grave (p3); meeting with miner Thomas Watson and his account of the drowning of his mining partner, Henry Cowell (p7); dropped supplies for Dr James Hector's party (p3); refers to drowning of crew member of the `Pryde' (ie `Pride of the Huron'), Thomas Davis, and his burial (p11); William Arthur's (Otago Provincial Chief Surveyor) camp (pp11-12) and von Tunzelman's Station on the shores of Lake Wakatipu (p12). Besides surveying the coast from Awarua Point to Abut Head, the party also explored the Jackson and Waiototo Rivers and surrounding areas. Account also refers to two members of the party as `Jones', who narrowly escaped death in a fall, and `Blackmore', who retrieved Davis' body from the Arawhata River, but they are not further identified. This typed transcript seems to have been made from Bain's signed holograph report held at the Canterbury Museum Archives. This document is on blue lined foolscap paper, originally tied but now bound in maroon buckram. The last page has been inscribed on rear: `Mr Bain / Journal / West Coast / 21 Mar 1864' and bears the number `268' circled. Source of title - Transcribed title Robert Bain was a surveyor contracted by the Canterbury Provincial Government to survey what was then the West Coast of Canterbury Province, from Abut Head to Awarua Point. Foxley Norris album

Description: Photographic album created by Joseph Foxley Norris, with many images of places visited in Great Britain, including castles, cathedrals, stately homes, ports, landscapes, and bridges. Joseph Foxley Norris was a founding member of the Cyclists' Touring Club in England, and was a member of the Pickwick Bicycle Club in England with one image being a group portrait of members of the club. A number of the English scenes were photographed by G.W.W. (George Washington Wilson). Other regions visited include Cape Town and Rio de Janeiro. Views of New Zealand are mostly in the South Island, with a few of Wellington (including Government Buildings, Parliament Buildings and Government House). One photograph taken by James Bragge shows a group of unidentified Maori standing outside a meeting house in Masterton. South Island views include a bicycle "meet" in Christchurch, with a large crowd gathered, and a number of penny-farthing bicycles visible. A number of images show men riding penny-farthing bicycles and the dangers of so doing, with posed views of two men underneath their bicycles and one clutching a fence, taken in and around Christchurch. On page 108 is hand-printed award `Anniversary Sports, Christchurch,N.Z. 16th December 1880. The following ten views taken from the Cathedral Tower, Christchurch, are the 3rd prize in the One Mile Champion Bicycle Race won by J. Foxley Norris, Pioneer Bicycle Club'. Other views include a group of about four men touring along the West Coast Road, and notable buildings in Christchurch and Dunedin. One image shows the "cage" crossing the Teremakau River.
