Description: Notebook containing handwritten research notes, photographs, and newspaper clippings tipped in. Contains notes and clippings relating to the Ōrākau battle of 1864 and King Tawhiao, waiata, karakia, and a poem by Thomas Bracken about Ōrākau. Also includes notes from an interview with Tamati Hapimana, of Mokoia Island, which includes a karakia for planting kumara. The photographs include images of Ōrākau (one dated 1870 located at page 52 of the notebook, and one undated), and one of Ngāti Raukawa chief Hitiri Te Paerata located at page 39 of the notebook. Description: Comprise Meade's journals on the Esk and Curacao, botanical, biological, meteorological and and scientific observations, sandal wood, and the journal of a tour from Auckland to Taranaki 1849-1850 by Governor Grey Source of title - Transcribed Brenchley first visited the Pacific in 1850 with the French traveller, Jules Remy, during his American tour. He later visited New Zealand in 1864 with Lt Herbert Meade RN, and involved himself in Maori affairs. From Sydney he visited Pacific islands in the Curacoa in 1865 and the Esk in 1866. Description: Diagrammatic map drawn on higher ground overlooking the scene where the HMS Buffalo navy ship was wrecked ('28th July 1840, at 10 am'). Map shows the site was wrecked, in a flat, sandy beach area, the thickly wooded hills behind it, the encampment of those who were in the wrecked ship, points on the beach where parts of the ship were washed ashore, and an area of flat marshy ground. Also depicted is the neighbouring pa site (maori village) of the Chief Teraroa, ('Teraroa's hippah'), the encampment of the part of the Buffalo's crew 'who were employed in the firest, preparing the cargo, Mercury River, part of Wiritianga's pa site, as well as Mr Brown's wharf-store and settlement ('Buffalo's store's were landed there').
