Description: Photographs of New Zealand taken by various photographers, circa early 1880s. Images include several Maori groups, Maori kainga, meeting houses, carving; a large number of views of mud pools, geysers, hot springs, and in particular views of the Pink and White Terraces before the Tarawera eruption in 1886. Other views show areas of the South Island, including Dunedin City, Oamaru, Christchurch; and the North island including Auckland, Thames District (a number showing aspects of gold mining in the area). Description: Album of photographs. Most of the views of Canterbury and Thames were taken by Daniel Mundy, between 1868 and 1872. New Zealand scenes are mostly taken by Daniel Mundy, and include many landscapes; a few taken in Christchurch City; several show the Raukapuka Station and Raukapuka Bush, near Geraldine; several taken in and around the Thames Goldfields, at Moanatiri Valley and Te Puhi Flat, with one view of the workings of `The Wild Missouri. Quartz crusher. Thames'. A section of the album shows parts of England, including a number of Glastonbury Abbey and St Joseph's Chapel, Wells, Mitford and Mitford Castle, and Pang bourne [i.e. Pangbourne]. Description: Gold dredges, gold sluicing, and machinery associated with gold mining in the South Island. Includes a few photographs taken in Australia, particularly the Pioneer Tin Mine in Tasmania. Inserted in a pocket in the front of the album are 19 loose prints, chiefly showing various claims in the North Island, some of which are taken by H J Locke. Also named in these images are the Saxon Mine and Ivanhoe Mine. Pinafore Claim was located at Waiotahi, Thames. Cambria Claim was a gold mine located in Thames. Gold King Dredge was on the Clutha River near Roxburgh circa 1899. Title supplied by Library. Date range estimated partly on dates that dredges were known to be operating. Description: Album of tourist photographs of the North Island from the 1880s, many taken by identified photographers including J M (Josiah Martin), the Burton Brothers, and Wheeler & Son. There are a number of images of Waiwera, including one of two whaleboats meeting a horse-drawn carriage transporting a group of people from a steamer to land. Photographs relating to Maori include views of Parihaka; Taipari's house at Thames; Ngati Maniapoto chief Wahanui at his house, Alexandra; a large group in a hot pool at Whakarewarewa; and one of Aporo and Ngareta at Wairoa. Description: Photographs of the North Island of New Zealand taken by Daniel Mundy during the 1860s to 1871. Captions hand-written by Mundy on verso of each page. (Information from handwriting and signature `D.L.M.' in this album at p. 51) The Thames goldfields are shown in a number of images, including some with captions Shortland and Grahamstown (now part of Thames); the Moanataira [i.e. Moanatairi] wire tramway, with the Rainbow Hotel nearby; Hunt's claim (known as the Shotover Mine); the Missouri Battery; the Bank of New Zealand building at Grahamstown; and miners' huts. The timber industry is shown with kauri logs being transported by bullock teams and awaiting transport by water. Photographs associated with Maori include military outposts at Terewera (i.e. Tarawera) and Ormond; "Kawiti's Runanga, or court houses, now `tapu', Waiomeo, Bay of Islands" (p. 21); "limestone caves at Waiomeo [sic], Bay of Islands; the burial place of the Mangakahia tribe. Strictly tapu" (p. 22); "Group at Waimeo feast, Bay of Islands" (p. 20); "Native feast - or bone-scraping at the burial of the remains of several chiefs at Waiomeo, Bay of Islands" (p. 46); "Waipawa Valley, Poverty Bay, scene of the massacre by Te Kooti" (p. 47); "Here the moa feet impressions were found, Poverty Bay, Sept. 1871, D.L.M." (p. 51). There are two-image panoramas of the Thames goldfields and Napier. In this album they are not on following pages, but are separated.
