Description: Shows, from left to right: Hine Paketia, Puhara, Alice Kranama, Te Uri He Kahekakariki, Hine Rangia, and Patuware. The group were all members of the Ngati Kahungugnu tribe. The women on the left was Queen Hineipatekia, sister of Te Hapuku. She was mentioned as "our Queen" in Te Hapuku's 1851 letter to Governor Grey disputing the price offered by the Crown for the land. His "favourite wife of 13 wives, Hine Rangia" is second from the right and his daughter is on the far right. Te Hapuku (Te Ika Nui o te Moana, paramount chief of the Ahuriri/Napier area) was responsible for selling the tribe's land to the Crown. This led to intertribal warfare for many years. Figures drawn on separate sheets and pasted on to background. Descriptive note signed: R. Park. Some Maori names spelt incorrectly. Note on back. A very similar watercolour is in the Rex Nan Kivell Collection, National Library of Australia. It is titled Natives of Ahuriri (Hawkes Bay) alive in 1851 and is signed by Robert Park Inscriptions: Recto - beneath image - title and names and roles of the subjects, in ink. The notes were added later than the drawing was made, since they include death dates after 1851 for a number of the subjects Quantity: 1 watercolour(s).
