Description: Accounts of life in Wellington, Manawatu, Gisborne and Taranaki, and many political recollections and comments. There is a chapter on old-time racing, including the days before the book-maker was banned. There are also references to visiting celebrities, among them Mark Twain, Frank Bullen and Paderewski, and memories of many theatrical shows. Included is a summary of the career of the late Henry Hayward, a pioneer in cinema entertainment in NZ. Source of title - Transcribed He was a store-keeper, law clerk and land agent; member of Parliament for Hawera for six years; mayor of Hawera for thirteen years and member of other local bodies in Taranaki. He was a noted runner; played Rugby football for these provinces; and as owner and spectator was keenly interested in horse-riding. He was one of the founders of a number of clubs and societies, including the Philatelic Society and the Polynesian Society. Description: Photographs probably taken by George William Barltrop, circa 1890s-1900s. Most of the scenes are taken on a river boat trip up the Whanganui River, and include two of groups of Maori; one showing two nuns in full habit, walking behind three young Maori girls who are wearing ankle-length dresses. Some of the river scenes show stretches of the river, including several `on the rapids', and one of a group of men in a waka. Others are of the various villages passed on the trip, including one of the river boat tied up at Jerusalem, with a cart drawn by two horses alongside. One view shows the mouth of the Whanganui River at Patea, and from there the images are of the New Plymouth area, including Mount Taranaki (then Mount Egmont), the Sugar Loaves, the monument to Wiremu Tamati on the hill at Corbett Park (Oakura), and Opunake. Description: The papers, transcribed and compiled by John Morgan's great-grandson Robert, include extracts from his diaries and reminiscences. They relate mainly to the 1850s and describe life in Wanganui and Taranaki during this decade, including farming, economic activitity, travelling between New Plymouth and Wanganui and relations between the settlers and Maori. Also included is a description of a trip made by Morgan in 1853 droving sheep from Kai-Iwi to Taranaki published in the `Hawera star', 10 Aug 1935 and a brief talk about John and William Morgan given by Robert Morgan. John Morgan was born in Dorset and emigrated to New Zealand in 1849 aboard the `Berkshire'. After a brief period in Taranaki he settled in Wanganui. Cadastral map showing names assigned to properties such as Smith, Disten, Lakeman, Chilman, Oliver, Candish, W. Allen, Neale, Wallace, Broadmore. Includes four blocks of land marked 'Natives'. A Maori path is marked. Shows Te Henui River. A handwritten note reads: 'The road will be carried as marked up to my land; the dotted line is the supposed direction of the road into the interior leaving the Maori path to the left. Subjects featured in collection materials include: - business, legal and family matters, especially relating to Utica, Cincinnati, London and Whanganui - abolition and the anti-slavery movement (Cornelius Burnett Snr and his sons were members of the Underground Railroad in Cincinnati, Ohio) - American politics, education and human rights, including slavery, the Civil War and the Mexican War - the confectionary and bakery trade in the United States and New Zealand - religion, spiritualism and churches - music, drama and comedy performances (including theatre programmes) - property, land ownership, conveyances and deeds - farming and farm management - domestic service, wages, employees and tenants - shipping voyages, migration and international travel - the New Zealand Wars in Taranaki and Whanganui - the First World War (including nursing, training camps, the home front) - health, illness, epidemics (cholera, smallpox, flu or influenza) Source of title - Supplied title Whanganui Regional Museum holds handwritten copies of correspondence made by Cornelius Burnett (1805.360.2 LETTERS), the diaries of Joseph Augustus Hornsby Burnett and Cornelius Burnett (1975.83 DIARIES) as well as a deed, photographs and family items. Joseph Burnett and Mary Ann (née Burnett) emigrated from England to America circa 1830, and then to New Zealand in 1856 with their children Cornelius, Josephine Augusta, Alfred, and Emma. They had lived in Oneida County, New York State, known as a centre of the abolitionist movement, and in Cincinnati where they were involved with the Underground Railroad, helping runaway enslaved people. In Wanganui they opened a confectionery and bakery. From 1870 they lived at 'Oneida' homestead and farm property (also known as Trenton House), in Fordell, east of Whanganui.
