Two canoes are drawn up on the beach to the left and other Maori are visible in the distance. A carved figure leans from a rock behind and above Hongi. There are rifles and cartridge cases on the ground and one man is holding a taiaha. The scene is on a beach close to Russell (Kororareka) and took place in November 1827. Description: Journal covers the period 2 Jul 1819 to 31 Jan 1821 and contains a day-to-day log of of the voyage to Australia and New Zealand. It details the activities of the crew in the Bay of Islands, Hokianga and Whangaroa Harbour and mentions local Maori. Seven charts accompany the text. Baskerville was a midshipman on the Dromedary which, after delivering a load of convicts to Sydney, proceeded to New Zealand. Description: Shows canoes, storehouse and carved objects. Hongi is seated in a central position, with huia feathers in his hair. Earle, seated on the left, is gesturing and is wearing a green cap. Another European is seated behind Earle, his friend Shand. Hongi's family and supporters surround him and the group is seated at the base of a low cliff. The meeting took place in a bay about 1 mile from Kororareka (Russell). Hongi had fought without his armour, supplied by King George IV, and had been wounded by a ball in the chest. He was to die the following year. Identification: the exact identity of Mr Shand is not known. Earle described him as a Scotsman. Exhibited in 'Two centuries of New Zealand landscape art' Exhibition at Auckland City Art Gallery, 2 February - 22 April 1990. Exhibited in 'Treasures in Trust' exhibition to celebrate 75th anniversary of the Alexander Turnbull Library in 1995. Exhibited in 'The Dream Collectors' Exhibition at Te Papa / Museum of New Zealand, 14 February 1998 -; then touring to Auckland City Art Gallery and Dunedin Public Art Gallery. Also known by title: The wounded chief, Hongi (or Honghi). Description: Watercolour by an unidentified hand, possibly after Augustus Earle's lithograph Kororadika Beach [1827 or 1828], published 1838. View from the top of a steep path looking down towards the beach. There is a ship in the bay, as well as other vessels in the water and on the beach, which could be waka. The view is framed on both sides by trees; on the left are three trees that look like palms, but that are probably cabbage trees. Two Maori figures stand in the foreground. These are probably women, as they both have what appear to be babies on their backs. Description: Maker not identified. The pātītī (axe) wooden handle has a hole for string attachment at the end opposite the head. Conflicting provenance information supplied by Tony Murray-Oliver suggests the axe was associated with Hone Heke at Kororareka. Label on the handle has now gone, but according to the photograph of the object, this label read: "Axe belonging to Hongi. Presented by F W Vosseler, Wellington. Title supplied by Library.
