Description: Military map showing operations from the Auckland Fort Britomart Albert barracks, south along the military route to Cambridge, Aratitaha and Tokanui, Waikato District. Depicts military blockhouses, redoubts and forts (five in the Waikato region and over eleven in South Auckland), stockages, routes used on garrison duty only, engagements, Maori pa and kainga and the confiscation boundary as gazetted 17/12/1864 including the aukati (frontier) line. Also shows mission stations Waipa and Taupiri and geographical features, most with Maori placenames. Identifies battle sites at several places including Hairini (22.2.64), Rangiaohia (21.2.64) Kihikihi and Orakau (2.4.64), Waiari (11.2.64) and in South Auckland including Hills Clearing (8.9.63), Koheroa (17.7.63), Meremere (1.11.63). Several Maori pa and kainga are named, including Tokanui, Te Kopua, Otawhao, Otautahanga. In the Waikato regions a similar number of both redoubts and pa sites are identified. Description: View from the water of a Maori canoe with fifteen Maori on board. Two men are rowing and two other people are holding oars; one a man in European clothes standing near the prow of the waka on the left, the other a woman with a child strapped to her back, standing at the stern on the right. In the background across the water is the extremely steep site of Kahuwera Pa, on the northern shore of the Bay of Islands. Kahuwera Pa was viewed by Duperrey and his crew on 9 April 1824 Proof copy, based on a watercolour drawing by Antoine Chazal, in its turn based on a watercolour drawing by Jules LeJeune, artist with Duperrey during his 1824 visit to the Bay of Islands. The original drawing has the same number of people aboard, but differently arranged. The details of the canoe are quite different. There are many more buildings shown at Kahuwera in the original than in the copy. The original drawing is in the Bibliotheque du Service Historique de la Marine, Vincennes, Paris. The title of the original is Habitants de la N.lle Zelande, avec une vue de leur place fortifiee ou Hippah - 10 avril 1824. Chazal's watercolour is located at C-082-098. Description: Survey map with topographical features, in the vicinity of the lower half of the Orongorongo River, from Windy Point, southwards to Turakirae Head, northwestwards to Fitzroy Bay and eastwards to the Mukamukaiti Stream. Identifies Crown land and Native (Maori) land. The Orongorongo River, Daniel Riddiford's land (Orongorongo Station), the east coast, and the site of the old pa (kainga) at the rivermouth are surveyed in detail. Shows an old fortified pa between the Orongorongo and the Wainuiomata rivers. Map (before copying) signed by several officials as certified, including Deputy Inspector of Surveys, the Chief Surveyor, and ER Foster. Signed as correct by surveyor George and Swanson. Description: Scene in the interior of a fenced pa, with storehouses, dwellings and a wharenui. Two men are crouched beside an iron cooking pot in the right, there are people visible in doorways and a woman with a child on her back is walking across the compound. A pig (or possibly a dog) is on the left. The style is naive. Formerly attributed to J. A. Gilfillan, but the style is too naive. More like the work of James Coutts Crawford. By the same artist, and with the same provenance as A-093-002.
