Description: New Zealand views taken circa 1870s to 1880s by E Wheeler & Son. Scenes include both North Island and South Island views, and all places named are listed above, as are businesses, ships and buildings, where possible. Items of interest include a photograph of trout taken by the Upper Selwyn River "A good day's sport. 38 fish, with the fly, 2 rods" with two large baskets alongside. Two scenes show different means of transport across rivers where there are no bridges. One is the "Cage bridge" (or Flying Fox) across the Teremakau (Taramakau) River, and the other shows a ferry punt across the Buller River. A number of views show farming activities, including a scene near Cheviot of about 20,000 sheep being drafted for shearing; and one of a wagon laden with wool bales being hauled by a team of bullocks. A view of gold sluicing is shown in this album with the locality indistinct. The same view is shown in the first Wheeler Album (PA1-o-532) in which the locality is named as Waimea. Description: Seated portrait of Kawakawa (Bay of Islands) chief Rangituke, his wife leaning on his shoulder, his son seated at his feet, viewed, according to the artist, 'from the window of my hut at the Bay of Islands' (Russell or Kawakawa?). Description: A large thatched storehouse (pataka) on four poles to the left, outside a fenced area containing three houses (one with a European style slab chimney), and a smaller taller storehouse on the far right. A group of Maori outside the fence appear to be selling potatoes to a European. No. S97 in Richard S. Schneiderman's catalogue raisonne. State v/vi. Description: Photograph shows the large and intricately carved Ngāti Tūwharetoa pātaka named Hīnana ki uta, Hīnana ki tai (search the land and sea), which was built at Waihī on the shores of Lake Taupō in 1855. Shows a Māori group seated alongside, comprising a woman flanked by two men holding guns. People possibly identified (from left to right); Rangitua, Ngaumu, and Aperahama Whetu, also known as Tuatara. Photograph taken by Daniel Louis Mundy between 1863 and 1872. Description: 'From Te Kapa's kaik' on the left, drawn across the page, is a view across a valley towards hills, with the small buildings of the kaik or village in the foreground. Below that 'Te Morokuia' (or Te Morokina?) is a view of a distinctive low hill. On the upper right drawings of three items lost in Mantell's travels: 'Ye candle box [candlestick] wh[ich] was lost atte [at] Otaitai'. 'Ye nyfe [knife]... wh. was lost atte Orewa' and a third object, possibly another knife 'loste atte Godde nos wher' [lost at God knows where]. Bottom right is Mantell's group crossing the Waitaki River in a large canoe, with their Maori guides and their baggage, watched from the bank by a fifth man with his baggage. Description: Shows canoes, storehouse and carved objects. Hongi is seated in a central position, with huia feathers in his hair. Earle, seated on the left, is gesturing and is wearing a green cap. Another European is seated behind Earle, his friend Shand. Hongi's family and supporters surround him and the group is seated at the base of a low cliff. The meeting took place in a bay about 1 mile from Kororareka (Russell). Hongi had fought without his armour, supplied by King George IV, and had been wounded by a ball in the chest. He was to die the following year. Identification: the exact identity of Mr Shand is not known. Earle described him as a Scotsman. Exhibited in 'Two centuries of New Zealand landscape art' Exhibition at Auckland City Art Gallery, 2 February - 22 April 1990. Exhibited in 'Treasures in Trust' exhibition to celebrate 75th anniversary of the Alexander Turnbull Library in 1995. Exhibited in 'The Dream Collectors' Exhibition at Te Papa / Museum of New Zealand, 14 February 1998 -; then touring to Auckland City Art Gallery and Dunedin Public Art Gallery. Description: A pre-eruption view of Lake Rotokakahi (Green Lake) shows the Maori village of Kaiteriria. In the left foreground a group of Maori is seated on the ground beside a raised storehouse (pataka), with several other pataka and whare further away. There is a stake fence between the pataka and the whare, as well as another pataka on the headland reaching away into the lake. Three figures sit in a waka with a small rectangular sail at lower right. The island or headland at the far right has a flat top which may be a pa site. Description: A series of palisades of the pa on the hill to the left, with storehouses visible behind the highest level of fencing. Four Maori seated or leaning on a carved post in the foreground, along with a piglet; two others seated at the lake edge and three in or beside a small waka laden with stores at the water's edge. Related copies: Original for a lithograph by J W Giles in The New Zealanders Illustrated (London, 1847), Plate 32. Motupoi Pah was described by Angas as a heavily fortified pa on a neck of land jutting into lake Roto-Aire. The chief at the time of this painting was Munga-Kahu, a Roman Catholic convert.
