Description: View north across the harbour from Thorndon, just to the left of Pipitea Pa, with the palisades of the pa on the right, a ravine and three Maori to the left of the ravine. Kaiwharawhara with the hotel is visible on the extreme left, with the Western hills leading to the Tararuas, and the Hutt Valley in the distance. The view may possibly be further along Thorndon Beach from the Pa. Description: View from the water of a Maori canoe with fifteen Maori on board. Two men are rowing and two other people are holding oars; one a man in European clothes standing near the prow of the waka on the left, the other a woman with a child strapped to her back, standing at the stern on the right. In the background across the water is the extremely steep site of Kahuwera Pa, on the northern shore of the Bay of Islands. Kahuwera Pa was viewed by Duperrey and his crew on 9 April 1824 Proof copy, based on a watercolour drawing by Antoine Chazal, in its turn based on a watercolour drawing by Jules LeJeune, artist with Duperrey during his 1824 visit to the Bay of Islands. The original drawing has the same number of people aboard, but differently arranged. The details of the canoe are quite different. There are many more buildings shown at Kahuwera in the original than in the copy. The original drawing is in the Bibliotheque du Service Historique de la Marine, Vincennes, Paris. The title of the original is Habitants de la N.lle Zelande, avec une vue de leur place fortifiee ou Hippah - 10 avril 1824. Chazal's watercolour is located at C-082-098. Description: Red-coated soldiers (probably from the 58th Regiment) in the foreground, groups of Maori men and women, canoes drawn up on the shore of the Hutt River, the palisades of the pa in the background, with tall trees beyond. Several Maori are carrying bundles on their backs, possibly of potatoes, since Brees mentions 'extensive potato grounds' around the pa in his text on p.30 of Pictorial Illustrations of New Zealand The date of the original is likely to be 1845, since the soldiers shown did not occupy the Hutt Valley until 1845. The pa was located on the east bank of the river close to the site of the present Melling Bridge. Brees mentions that Makaenuku Pa was built by Porirua Maori after 1840. Description: A group of Maori in front of a tent shelter. The group includes two seated women, one breast-feeding an infant, a naked toddler reclining in front and two young men standing behind, one with a rifle and cartridge case. A tewhatewha (weapon) lied in fron on top of a pile of cloaks. A third woman kneelds to the right, her back to the artist and her face hidden. According to Oliver's accompanying text, the scene is at Kororareka (modern Russell) in 1851, during the feast (hakari) put on by Tamati Waka Nene for Governor George Grey. 'The man on the right with the musket is Neddy, who fought against us under Heki [Hone Heke] at Ruapekapeka. The girl next to him is Maria ... the woman with the baby is said to be the daughter of Chevalier Dillon; and on the left is Jane, who was famous for her personal attractions ... Description: Photographs of New Zealand, many taken by Robert Henry Bartlett. Several of these were taken in Nelson, one showing Fairfield House, and one interior view of a room (on page 50) with the pencilled caption "Fell - Nelson". Possibly in what is now named Warwick House which was built by Alfred Fell in 1854. However pages 19 to 31 contain photographs taken by Josiah Martin in the Rotomahana hot springs area including the village of Te Wairoa, and the Pink and White Terraces before the 1886 Tarawera eruption. The album contains 53 pages of which 32 to 49 are empty. Description: Shows a Maori man and woman at the far left, standing outside a whare with carved tekoteko figure. Behind the whare is a palisade and to the far right a waka is being launched into the sea. This work has also been know as 'Meeting house and stockade' A third foreground figure has been pencilled in beside the couple at the left, but has not been completed. Description: Two images on one page. The upper image shows a group of Maori children on a swing or moari, a tall pole with ropes attached from its top, flying out over a bank, watched by a group of seated adults and children. The palisades of a pa are in the right background and a low hill in the distance. The lower view shows a haka, with naked men in the act of raising oars, watched by other Maori. Canoes are drawn up at the edge of Lake Rotorua and the palisades of Ohinemutu Pa and its higher buildings can be seen behind the men. Both drawings are copied from the work of Joseph Jenner Merrett, without acknowledgement. See the Library's Hobson Album for Merrett's drawing 'A native game' showing the swing. (E-216-017). This was drawn before 1843. Angas visited New Zealand in 1844. Similarly, in the Hobson Album, also by Merrett is 'The pah of Oinamutu on the Rotorua Lake', which provides the background Angas has used for War Dance. Description: The British attack on Kapotai Pa, Waikare Inlet, Bay of Islands. Several armed redcoats by a clump of bushes in the foreground, other soldiers and "friendly" Maori firing from behind a line of bushes in the middle distance towards the fenced pa site set against hills. A European house outside the fencing on the right has other Maori around it. This attack took place in the Omapere area, a week after the attack on Puketutu Pa. Kapotai Pa was on one of the head creeks of the Waikare Inlet. Bridge organised a boat expedition to Kapotai Pa and burned the pa while the friendly Maori, under Tamati Waka Nene, fought the Kapotai in the bush. (Information from James Cowan's "The New Zealand Wars" (1922), p.45, where this image is reproduced. Description: Te Moanaroa (also known as Te Amoahanga and Amoanaroa) of Waingaroa or Raglan Harbour, standing on the left, dressed in a fringed cloak with tassels and pompoms of wool. On the right, squats Te Awaitaia or William Naylor, dressed in a kiwi feather and flax cloak. Behind them are the palisades of a pa and the raupo roof of a building. Both men are described as chiefs of Waikato and both are converts to Christianity associated with Rev. Robert Maunsell at Waikato Heads. European soldiers standing guard, two carrying a stretcher in the background, a rifle and parts of the broken palisade lying in the foreground, and wounded and dead Maori men visible in the trenches, including Reweti, in a trench to the right, facing the viewer. A tunnel on the left is marked as a covered way, and a tall pole in the background, on a slant is the flagpole. A low land formation in the background to the left is noted as Maungatapu cliffs with cemetery. Tauranga Harbour can be seen in the background Very similar to A-033-009. Robley made many copies of this view Another such view in Cowan's New Zealand Wars has Robley's additional explanatory text around the outside (neg 10985 1/2). The section along the left, to the left of the trench and inside the palisade is a covered passage leading to rifle pits. The figure lying in the left trench is described as 'dead Maori on blanket'. The figure in the right-hand trench is described as 'bearded wounded Maori' and 'Sticks knocked from the palisade' and 'sticks of palisade scathed by shot', '68th sentry on the higher part of the Pa', as well as 'fallen flagstaff in rear' are noted.
