Description: Views of the Otago Region taken by unidentified photographers, circa 1870s to 1895. Many show buildings in Dunedin, including one house `Lisburn House' built for the Fulton family in 1865; also commercial buildings, church buildings, school buildings (Otago Boys' High School), and Dunedin Gaol. The church buildings include the Chapel in Leith Street, the Chapel in Great King Street, and the Baptist Chapel. Description: The papers consist of: Application form submitted by Roger James Cotton; land documents; history of family and property (including `Cotton family' from printed publication (p524)); photographs The original owner of the land in Waipori District (formerly Tuapeka County) was Thomas Dickson who was granted 15 acres by the Crown in 1872. He died in 1873 and the land passed to his widow Margaret (nee Atkinson) who remarried Robert Cotton in 1875. The land was transferred to Robert Cotton in 1891. At the time of the New Zealand Century Farm and Station award in 2005 the farm was owned jointly by brothers Roger James and Stuart William Cotton (great-grandsons of Robert Cotton). Collection consists mainly of portraits of sailing ships and steam ships visiting Port Chalmers, but also includes views of Port Chalmers and environs. She worked as a photographer from that address. Processing information: Archivists notes - Originally arranged and described in 1993. Description: Consists of 3 logs written by Mackay on the whaling ship Splendid for the years 1875-1877. The logs detail the voyages of the ship from Port Chalmers to various places around New Zealand, the Southern Ocean and into the Pacific. Also contains discharge papers dated Oct 1877; an annotated copy of `The Cruise of the Cachalot' by Frank T Bullen published in 1899 and an annotated proof of a galley for a newspaper article, ca 1930s, reporting on Mackay's life and his claim that Bullen's 1899 book was in fact based on the Splendid. Description: Shows the town's main street, with horse hitched outside hotel, a wagon going away along the street, Staite Bros Molyneux Store, an American flag hanging limp on a flagpole in the distance. There is a blacksmith's forge at right, a wagon resting on the road at left. Accompanied by an information text sheet, by Marian Minson. Description: Elevated view looking down over the township of Port Chalmers and across the Otago Harbour to Quarantine Island, Goat Island (with single men's quarantine barracks visible) and beyond to the Otago Peninsula (Mt Charles on left and Harbour Cone on right). In the immediate foreground (on left) is the old cemetery. In the foreground there is a railway wagon and large stockpile of rocks waiting to be shifted. In foreground to the right is the cutting for the main Trunk Railway. Retail shops and commercial premises in George Street can be seen, including those of James Menelaus, James Bosworth Taylor (painter & paperhanger) & Simmonds & Sons. On the hill to the left in Grey Street is the Port Chalmers Grammar School and Holy Trinity Church (only partially visible). Photograph was taken by Herbert Deveril and dated ca 1876. The new Port Chalmers Grammar School in the foreground (centre right partially obscured by trees) was built 1874-1875 and occupied from December 1875. The building in George Street on extreme left was not completed until March 1875. Alongside this building is a large excavation for buildings eg Marine Hotel completed in 1881.
