Hansen family : Papers

Description: Estate papers of W F Hansen and his father Anders. These include correspondence, diaries, autograph books, insurance papers, accounts, property papers, papers re British & Continental Film Company Ltd, 1920s. The diaries of Elizabeth Hansen, 1928-1932, 1954-1959, 1962, 1964, contain brief daily entries describing her domestic activities, weather conditions, involvement in community work and the Methodist Church. The early diaries were kept while the Hansens were in Featherston (the period immediately following their marriage). From 1954, after Fred Hansen died, Elizabeth lived at Masterton. Included in some of the diaries are newspaper clippings which report on church and community affairs. Contains letters by Anne Hansen aboard the `Rangitata', in England and Ireland to Fred and Lizzie Hansen in Masterton, New Zealand. Anne describes her daily life and travel and discusses family matters. Also contains a letter from Lena Cook (nee Hansen) while on holiday in Melbourne and a letter from an ex-soldier Elyabill Harrold to Fred Hansen following Fred's return from World War One. See ATL-Group-00334 for photographic material relating to the Hansen family. William Frederick Hansen's father, Anders Hansen was a lighthouse keeper. Fred Hansen was born at Cape Saunders, Westport. He was a tunneller in World War One. Elizabeth and Fred Hansen lived at Featherston and later moved to Masterton where Fred died in 1953. Description: The collection comprises four folders on Robert Martin's career as a post office employee and telegraphist, while the rest consists of papers, scrapbooks and newspaper cuttings relating to his military service during World War II in North Africa, Italy, and the Solomon Islands with the Field Ambulance service of the New Zealand Medical Corps. Correspondence with his brother, Martin, and his sister, Valerie, are included, as is correspondence with two of his comrades in the Field Ambulance. Also included is a typed translation of a Japanese diary which he acquired during the Solomon Islands campaign, probably on Mono in the Treasury Islands, and a typed copy of the diary and other papers of his friend, Colin John Arroll, who also served with the Field Ambulance. The first donation consisted of Robert Martin's civilian career as a telegraphist for the New Zealand Post and Telegraph Department, and the second his photographs, correspondence and diaries from his military service in World War II. His friend, John Colin Arroll, who also served with the Field Ambulance, sent Robert Martin a copy of his diary, reminiscences and other papers. Donor is Robert Martin's daughter. Description: Seven photographic prints taken between circa 1880s and circa 1920s, by a range of photographers. Comprises: - An image of the 'Cheviot football team' with a church in the background, taken by Rentoul, of Cheviot. - A group portrait of two women, two men, and a boy, with a wooden building in the background, possibly a school. Taken by S. Collins of Dunedin. - An image of a soldier in uniform. Inscription on the back reads: "The late Sergeant R. A. Fleming C. Y. C. Killed in action Aug 6th/15 Waldens Knob Gallipoli in his 25th year. To Mr M. Morrison, View Hill, Oxford. From R. Fleming 'Lowland Leas' Fernside". - A photographic postcard of the Waiau Butchery, including five men outside the shop, one on a horse, and one man on a cart with horse, and a dog. Four of the men are dressed in butcher's aprons. - An image of the Dominican Convent, Oamaru. Aotearoa Series. N102. Inscription reads "Wishing you a sale a day, Audy". - An image of five young people in fancy dress. One boy is dressed as a boy scout, two girls are in European dress, and two are dressed in Japanese style dress (kimono with fans). One girl is holding a ribbon on a pole which reads "Weldon's Fashions". - An image of a baby sitting on a woven chair with inscription on the back which reads "Ted Burgess, Cheviot". Description: Photographic prints, possibly relating to the McGregor family, of a range of subjects, mainly taken ca 1940s. Portraits include three photographs of twins at different stages of childhood, ca 1890s, two World War I era portraits (one of a woman, the other of a man in uniform), and portraits from the 1940s. Also contains an image of a family group, possible with W H Brown at the centre, and an image of an elderly man, possibly of W H Brown, holding his military discharge papers. World War II photographs include soldiers in uniform, Royal New Zealand Air Force base in the New Hebrides (later Vanuatu) and scenic island images, and an unidentified RNZAF sports team from the base. Individuals are identified on the rear of two group images. Two further photographs, one of a crowd during a ceremony and the other of men in a dining hall, have the name J McGregor on the rear of the print. Various images from the 1940s include a carpentry class group portrait, the Air Force massed band, a pipe band in Dunedin, the T S S Ernslaw on Lake Wakatipu, an Auckland Wharf scene, a thermal are behind the Regent Theatre [model of pink and white terraces?], and the Tongariro Chateau.
