Description: Views of Wellington between 1842 and 1845. The top view shows the house of William Wakefield (the site of the Beehive) looking up The Terrace beyond. The central view is of Captain Daniell's sawmill on the Kaiwharawhara stream. A bullock cart is carrying logs to the right, several men are resting in the foreground, there are piles of tree trunks in the foreground, and tall bush in the background. The lowest view shows the bank on the corner of Willis Street and Manners Street with soldiers marching by, from the barracks next door to the bank. Description: A view along a beach (now Thorndon Quay) looking towards Kaiwharawhara and Wadestown, with the road to to Wadestown shown winding up the hill in the background. There are houses at the beachfront on the left, mostly at the top of the low hill above the beach. Major Baker's house appears as a roof only, with a tree in front of it. A couple on horseback is in the foreground and a Maori man, woman and child stand at the left. The Library holds a photographic copy of the privately-owned watercolour original for this engraving, painted between 1842 and 1845 (negative 138581 1/2). The watercolour has no Maori group on the left but is otherwise very similar to the engraving Quantity: 1 colour art print(s). Physical Description: Hand-coloured engraving, 75 x 130 mm on sheet 380 x 280 mm.

Description: Palisades of the pa at Kaiwharawhara, at the water's edge, with raupo houses, with verandahs and tree-trunk columns in the foreground, with one Maori man reclining in the left foreground and a woman and child seated by one of the whare. Two canoes, with Maori chapel of raupo beyond them in the middle ground and a European yacht beyond that. On the background hill to the right, the whalers' lookout "Tutaewera", aand on the central hill, a zig-zag Maori path running up the Ngaio Gorge area. The background range shows British Peak on the left and Mount Kaukau on the right. The file print during 1970s and 80s attributed to John Pearse and titled "Wellington". However, it pre-dates Pearse's time in Wellington during the 1850s. Other Titles - Wellington. John Pearse. See article about this picture in Kapa-Mana News 20 August 1980, by William Secker. The painting is pre-1845, since the Hutt Road is not yet formed. The architecture of the raupo huts on the left shows the whalers' influence, with the tree-trunk verandah posts.
